A Haunted, Mythic Landscape: On “The Low, Low Woods”

heading.jpeg

Apologies for the missed week last week; things got much more hectic than I'd expected. (And here's the obligatory plug for my novel.) This newsletter will be back next week at the usual time, with thoughts on a book that featured one of the most memorable cities I've seen in comics. And now, for some thoughts on a book that features one of the most memorable towns I've seen in comics...

Given that it’s written by someone who once wrote a compelling short story structured as a series of Law & Order: SVU episode summaries, it shouldn’t have been all that surprising that The Low, Low Woods did interesting things with structure. And yet it took a little while for me to see just where its storyline was going. Once I did — and once I’d gone through multiple readings of the book — its full shape presented itself. And, from a gripping opening to a stunning final image, that shape proved especially unnerving.

Alternately: this is a book that rewards patience. It also abounds with visceral imagery. Not bad multitasking there, I must say.

The Colo(u)r Out of Mind: On "A Trick of the Light"

And here we are, with newsletter number three. This one's about a short graphic novel I first learned about when I backed it on Kickstarter. Folk horror, a period setting, and bizarre light — not a combination I can easily pass up. I'll be back in two weeks.

A Hometown, an Investigation, a Horror: On "Friday"

I don’t entirely know why, but it’s starting to feel like the right time to get this newsletter properly up and running. I’ve been thinking about storytelling a lot lately, and something seems to have locked into place in my brain; a sense of “oh, right, this is how this works.” I’m also going to try to get these written a bit in advance, so as not to fall behind. This is a running theme in my life right now.

This is Postcards From Komiksoj, where I write about comics and storytelling. And hopefully, these will be sent out every two weeks or so.

Hallucination, Art, and Memory: On “The Department of Truth: The End of the World”

Welcome. After a couple of false starts and a move from Substack to Buttowndown, this newsletter is finally up and running. What’s it about? Comics. What kind of comics? All kinds. Some old, some new. I’ve missed writing about comics at length; I’m happy to be doing it again. And thus, this whole adventure begins with an anecdote involving Batman, middle school, and the comics store where the singer from Monster Magnet used to work.
