Advent and Christmas music abounds in our house these days. Last year Viv discovered Leslie Odom Jr.’s Christmas album, and let’s just say at first I was not impressed.
But this year the song Heaven and Earth has been a favorite for our kids, and on the way to work last week I thought I would actually listen to the lyrics to see if there was something there beyond the (admittedly beautiful) melody.
I didn’t realize it, but I was in for a real treat. It turns out the entire song is meant to be imagined as Joseph singing to Mary on the night of Jesus’ birth.
And especially when heard in this light, it is really good.
Finally, I am happy to share that I am now a contributor to Covenant, a daily publication by the fine folks at The Living Church. I have written guest essays for them in the past (see here, here, and here), but my first piece as a regular contributor will be published on the Feast of the Holy Name, otherwise known as New Years’ Day.
