I'm speaking at Svelte Summit this weekend!

Hey all, it’s been a minute!

I don’t have a new blog post to share right now, but wanted to call attention to two events: one that’s happening soon and one that already happened.

First, Svelte Summit is happening this Saturday, May 6! This is the yearly virtual conference focused on Svelte, and the whole thing will be streamed for free on the Svelte Society YouTube channel. I have a lightning talk lined up talking View Transitions and how they (might?) be able to replace some of Svelte’s built-in animation primitives.

You can catch a li’l preview of my Windows solitaire-themed demo over on Twitter. Check out the event site to see all the other talks.

View Transition experiments and sheep

Hey, how’s it going?

Sending this one out a bit later than I meant to – I had a few busy weeks in there, and I just got back from a long-planned vacation to Iceland!

Latest blogs

My blogging time lately was focused on the new View Transitions API, which just landed in stable Chrome (though I think the API is still somewhat experimental – at least, it’s only implemented by a single browser at the moment). This API was formerly known as “shared element transitions,” and if it’s new to you I highly recommend reading the explainer, linked above.

Advent of SvelteKit highlights and rate limiting

Hello! I’ve got two new posts to share with you this week, capping off my most productive blogging month… ever? We’ll see if I can keep it up.

First, over on the ol’ blog I finally published my Advent of SvelteKit 2022 wrap up. I had been meaning to publish this for a while so that I had a record of this project outside of my tweets/toots, but writing something up about each of the 17 demos was an intimidating bit of writing. However, late last week I cracked it – why not just write up a few of my favorites, and link to the others at the end?

So that’s what I did. It’s still rather long, but hopefully I was able to focus on the more interesting parts and relegate the other ones to a bulleted list at the end. Among the demos I went more in-depth on are:

  • a progressively enhanced search form (which shares a lot of the concepts from my last post) with a debounced submission
  • safely using random numbers with SSR and hydration to light up a Christmas tree
  • a media player that works with and without JS
  • using details/summary for a joke punchline reveal

2022 in review

Hello, I hope the new year is treating you well!

This week I published two new blog posts!

First was a 2022 in review post where I wrote about my year in blogging, open source, and otherwise. I also covered some of my favorite games/books/TV/movies/podcasts/music of the year, if you’re interested in my taste in media!

Second, I published my first-ever non-webdev-related post, a Game music 2022 survey playlist. I’m a big fan of video game music, and created a giant playlist (300+ tracks) surveying the video game music releases of 2022. This was very much inspired by the exhaustive Fluxblog survey playlists for pop music, though I didn’t pay any attention to the sequencing of tracks. If you’re a VGM fan (or just want some varied mostly instrumental music), give it a listen.

Building tic-tac-toe with Svelte

Hello, and thanks for subscribing to my newsletter!

Yesterday I published a new blog post, “Building tic-tac-toe with Svelte.” In the post I show what considerations went into building this demo - it’s more than you might think! Included are discussions of:

  • the importance of <button>
  • how using reactive statements really simplifies the game flow
  • event forwarding
  • focus management and tick
  • visually-hidden button labels
  • when it’s okay to use querySelector in Svelte

What I learned about accessibility from axe-con 2021

I published a post this morning about what I learned from the axe-con accessibility conference this month. I spotlight talks from Sara Soueidan, Mark Steadman, Val Head, and Gerard Cohen and what I took away from each.

4 takeaways from axe-con 2021

I found the conference super valuable even though I was only able to catch a handful of talks. I highly recommend for the conference so you can watch recordings of the talks.
