Just and Joyful - 008 - Future Foundation
Hey Friends,
Happy November! I hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween and snagged a bunch of full-sized candy bars. There's nothing scarier than an unnecessarily long introduction - ahem I'm looking at you, food bloggers - so I'll jump right into it.
Over the last few months, I've been going deeper and deeper into the web3 space. It's one thing to read about it, but it's another to jump in and experience what it is all about. And through this experience, I've become convinced that an internet that is owned by users and creators is one that I want to support and build towards.
I'm also convinced that there is a huge opportunity in the web3 x social impact space. It is still early in the web3 space, let alone the web3 x social impact space, but that's precisely why we need to be involved right now. The building blocks of the next internet are being built right now, and if the perspectives and realities of the global majority are not taken into consideration, we risk recreating the structures and systems that keep so many from fully benefitting from it.
I started Future Foundation to explore this web3 x social impact space and to work towards a movement where we can create a better foundation for a more just and joyful future. In the first 24 hours of opening up our discord server, we've had over a hundred people come through, all curious to see how we can leverage web3 to reimagine our approach to social impact causes and organizations. In true web3 fashion, we're building out loud, and we've welcomed designers, developers, nonprofit professionals, civil servants, musicians, game designers, NFT artists, and more to the movement.
We are just getting started, and three broad areas are emerging:
1/ How might we use web3 to reimagine charitable giving?
2/ How might we support causes with web3 and web3 x social impact organizations?
3/ How might we build and amplify the web3 x social impact space?
These three areas stem from a set of core beliefs:
1/ We can create a more just and joyful world through design, technology, and community.
2/ Progress is possible, but not inevitable.
3/ New technologies and behaviors emerging from web3 create new possibilities for coordination and ownership.
4/ We need action at local, regional, and global levels if we are to redesign our systems so that they benefit everyone.
5/ Without clear intention, the world's most vulnerable populations will be the last to benefit from the promise of web3 and the broader digital economy.
Our next community call is on Tuesday, November 2nd at 10 AM Pacific in the Future Foundation discord server. If you're interested in learning more, you should come join us!
That's it from me! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out.
All the best from Vashon,
Dave
