Monday Links 4/26/21
Happy Monday, everybody!
Here are 5 interesting things to start your week.
- (Social Media) I found this essay about the Internet’s population of celebrity Knights and the “Mooks” who fight their culture war battles on the ground hilarious and insightful: The Internet of Beefs
- (Music) I’ve enjoyed NPR’s TinyDesk concerts for years, and this week’s “at home” edition at a giant family meal is wonderful: C. Tangona
- Austin Kleon published a nice blog post on Lou Harrison’s 4 C’s of artistry, as introduced in Dana Gioia’s interview the other week: Cherish, Conserve, Consider, Create
- (Podcasts, Music) My favorite podcast of the week was an interview with Dana Gioia’s brother, Ted Gioia, a jazz pianist who writes about music and literature. He happened to start a substack about those topics this week - Culture Notes of an Honest Broker.
- (Language) Alan Jacobs reflects on the descriptive or prescriptive missions of compiling a dictionary, and how one man like Samuel Johnson could create a beautiful and lasting monument to his language, while institutions and committees have sought to ‘fix’ the official language and usage.
