The Radicle - February 2021 Edition Out Now!
Happy Friday Radicles!
You did it. You made it to the end of the day.
We hope everyone had a good first week back from the break and was able to get out and enjoy some winter days. It’s been warm and sunny here in Waterloo, and spring could be in the air. Hopefully by the next newsletter we’ll be peeling off some layers!
This month’s edition of The Radicle is a serious, but hopeful one.
Bibiana Egbunike writes about the darker side of shiny new electronics in her article E-Waste: Electronic Waste and Why It’s a Problem. She presents some sobering statistics about e-waste, like that 50 million tons of waste is produced by the electronics industry each year alone, and lists some of the damaging chemicals that make it into the environment when it’s managed poorly.
We learn about Black and Indigenous environmental and human rights advocacy in Nicole Pham-Quan’s review of There’s Something in the Water, directed by Elliot Page and Ian Daniel. According to Pham-Quan, they “uncover the province’s history of colonialism, the government’s prioritization of corporate interests over public concerns, and the disproportionately significant environmental problems faced by Black and Indigenous communities”.
We also feature some beautiful poetry from first-time contributor Erin Michelle, and Jingxian Li weighs the merits of fireworks against their environmental externalities.
On a more hopeful note, we also feature Michelle Angkasa writing about her experience with mutual aid and community organizing in Harnessing People Power, and Andrew Rutland sits down with a one-time Environment student who has some advice for students looking to get into outdoor guiding and photography, or looking to change course altogether.
As always, there's more in the full monthly edition that you can read here, and don’t forget to follow us on all our socials like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
Remember, we’re always looking for submissions or feedback, so don’t be shy and reach out at theuwaterlooradicle@gmail.com.
Have a good final Friday of the month, and see you in March!
