Grace Cummings
Both artists were relatively new for me. One of the joys and privileges of being surrounded by beautiful gigs like these in this city is the opportunity to discover artists like these. The moment I played Grace Cumming's Heaven, I was taken aback at the depth of her voice. Something I did not expect at all. One of life's simple pleasures 😊. Luluc on the other hand transported me to a state of relaxation and nostalgia for better times.
Grace started her solo set without much commotion. She walked to the stage with a guitar. She mentioned that she had spilt some whiskey whilst at the bar earlier and hope we didn't notice that on her clothes.
Throughout her performance, her voice and the occasional intentional disharmonious notes really brought about an indescribable feeling of discomfort, intrigue, and morbid beauty. It was hard to not be present as she performed songs from her catalogues along with a cover. She then proceeded to play on the absolutely breathtaking resident grand piano. Her awkwardness was magnificent.
One quote from Grace that I really enjoyed:
"We don't know how long we have left. No one does."
Luluc & Band
Luluc had just come off touring in the US and hadn't visited in Australia in quite some time due to the pandemic. Zoe mentioned she had lost her voice a few days ago and that's why she was talking a bit quietly. However, no doubt she dug deep to provide the audience with an uncompromising performance.
Luluc performed a solid and extensive set. Her voice was heavenly and divine. I remember smiling through so many of her songs. The band supported her music style really well. They were subtle to not drown out Luluc's vocals and added some flavour to the traditional folk sound.
They have also put out a mixtape on Apple Music that inspired their setlist if anyone wants to give it a listen: https://music.apple.com/au/playlist/switched-on-luluc/pl.u-r2yBDbYuRWDgalv
