"The future is a benevolent black hole". If you've heard Lucy Dacus' music you'll know her music to be sweet, comforting, and insightful spanning subjects like coming of age to relationships. Hundreds of fans came out to see her during a cold, winter night at the Metro Theatre at the heart of the Sydney CBD.
The queue spanned all the way to the next street. The chatter amongst her fans was cheerful with friends, couples, and solo folks like myself ready to feel and sing along. I chatted with a wonderful person who was seeing Lucy for the first time as well. We both shared our delight and envy that Julia Jacklin supported Lucy in Melbourne's gig.
As the queue started to move forward, I started to realise the amount of people that would be occupying the Metro. This was going to be a packed event. Security staff started to remind everyone to have our IDs and ticket QR codes ready. A couple in front of me, perhaps in their 40s or 50s were taken aback when the security staff funnily said "We won't need your IDs though". This was met with laughter from the couple but we could all tell they were a little hurt 😄.
By the time the entire audience was inside, the support act, Alice Skye, was nearly finished. If anyone hasn't checked her out please do! She is a very talented Australian singer songwriter who always seems to give her heart and soul into every note. The fans were very nice to her! Alice ended her set with an unexpected cover of Zombie by The Cranberries. It worked really well!
As the audience waited for Lucy and her band to come on stage, there were scenes of friends taking photos together, someone blowing bubbles in the front row, and chatter on what songs everyone hopes makes it to the setlist.
The set itself was pretty much perfect. The instruments and vocals were very well optimised even all the way at the back. I counted at least 3 guitars and 1 bass guitar in Lucy's repertoire. The crowd sang through many of the songs she sang. A kind soul has recorded her set if anyone wants to relive this experience. Lucy also played an unreleased song that we all promised to not record. It was a beautiful ballad and it was certainly a treat.
The highlight for me was 'Night Shift'. I have never heard the audience sing so loudly and proudly alongside the entire song with all the lyrics in crystal clear rendition. It was certainly a very cathartic experience that I am happy to have been able to participate in.
Lucy and her band really seemed to have enjoyed their time in Australia. The extensive set and conversations in between songs really showed her ability to connect with us all. She really did spoil us all.
