Lachlan Bryan and his band are an incredibly talented set of singers and songwriters. I found myself seeking restitution of my feelings as I headed down to the Midnight Special at Newtown after work. This was the first time I had attended such an intimate bar and for the closeness of Bryan's music it was perfect.
The venue was cosy, warm, and welcoming. There were families, friends, couples, and solo folks like me at the back or near the bar. Suffice to say, we all shared some great moments together as strangers.
After some amusing anecdotes, Bryan's gratefulness to be able to tour again post-covid, and getting to know some of the audience members, Bryan dived into his discography with nothing but his voice and his guitar. Some of the tracks played included Black Coffee, You Remind Me of Yourself, The Road, and an unreleased track as well.
Black Coffee was a particular highlight as Bryan described his relationship with his grandfather, whose coffee habits inspired this song. It was more or less a dedication to a person he admired very much. This story made the song even more special to listen to.
The night also included collaboration with a local singer-songwriter who I was not able to get the name of. However, her father, Allan Caswell was at the venue. The audience was graced by a sweet and charming duet between Bryan and Caswell with Caswell's family close by and cheering him on. It was such a sweet moment.
The highlight for me was Bryan's cover of Bob Dylan's If You See Her, Say Hello which might just be the perfect breakup song ever written according to Bryan. This certainly tugged at the heartstrings.
I really enjoyed the night and Bryan's music. I hope I can see him again touring with his band 🙂.
