There’s a primal pleasure in feeling a wall of sound encompass your body. Boris performed Heavy Rocks (2002) in full at The Studio, Opera House as part of the Sydney Vivid Festival. It was a wonderful night full of beautiful, cascading sound and technical prowess.
Before setting foot in the venue, I was greeted by Sydney’s alluring multi-colour lights thanks to the annual Vivid Festival. The lights, the calm, cold air, and the froliccing of families, couples, friends, and long rangers added to a feeling of togetherness during the concert.
This was my first time in the Studio at the Opera House and it was a great balance between intimacy and space. The noise and fog was able to fill the entire room whilst having ample space to sit in the sidelines or stand centrestage. The fog and lights were quite expertly set in my opinion.
The band was joined by Tokie (JPN) playing the bass guitar. The entire band was kind, well spirited, and energetic. They got straight into the music and slowly opened up as the show went on. Atsuo’s energy was contagious as he sprung up the audience. The hype was real whenever he got up and rang the gong behind him. As the show progressed, it was hard not to see how transfixed the audience were. Atsuo even went in for a few cheeky crowd surfs. I’m still reminiscing about Rattlesnake and one of the encore tracks, Farewell, and how perfect these sounded.
This was a memorable night and Boris and guests put on quite a show for the crowd. There was noise, there was fog, and there was light. Let there be fuzz.
