You should be on Hacker News instead
Hacker news has shaped my mindset from high school soy boy to hard core C# coder who only uses Nix OS and runs my own DNS servers on an island.
Well not quite that hardcode, anymore because of twitter + interacting with reality, but I think it definitely put me in the right direction in what to think.
I feel like HN has loosened its tight grasp on people’s necks and gotten more soft (if you really want hard core HN go to lobste.rs ; I have invites if you want) but its probably the best popular place to interact with very smart coders and see whats up with the world. Hacker news has been my default news site for over a year at this point and since I’ve blocked or removed certain elements from Twitter, I only get my news from friends and my parents (heard that someone killed themselves at my HS a few weeks ago; not that uncommon around the Bay Area) which is a great filtering mechanism: since you really don’t need to know whats going on with the world all the time.
Takeaways:
- Browse HN occasiannly to understand the sentiment of the site itself
- Participate in HN to see the level of technicality you need to achieve in not only HN but everyday life in a tech co (imo)
- HN is better than reading the news if you’re in tech
- Keep in mind HN has made and broken tons of startups in the past. I got my initial 100k site hits from HN in a single day for my previous startup.
