for context, ive never liked the idea of sticking my age into my bio, but a few months ago felt kind of weird when someone thought i was much older so i temporarily added it until jake called me out on twitter: tweet ive been saying this for a while too: another tweet , but my argument on the semantics of slapping it on your profile, site, blog, whatever is probably greater than you or i'd imagine: you're making it part of your identity
more time to liftoff
i dont think your age should be part of your identity; i strictly think this. which is why i disagree with preimses of TKS (a subscription service for teenagers to get speaking positions to add onto their resumes/facebook profiles); for real, its just a group of kids who pay to get into a group and build things afaik. the reason i dont think you should be attached to your age outside of legal reasons is: the only upside is that you have more time, other than that, learning a concept in the same time it would take someone much older than you isn't talent, its just plain interest; there are far fewer talented kids than advertised. so the only advantage of being young is that you have more runway to liftoff; if you spend your time wisely around the same people who are around your age, your velocity and career trajectory can dramatically change for the better.
age is an advantage
being young also gives you the insane ability to connect with old out of touch people who either have insane networks or insane amounts of wealth; ive come to realize (and mentioned this in my previous post) that so many people are lonely and out of touch with reality, they want to get to mentor kids to feel like they've had some meaningful contribution in life (this is more of a human connection thing i think)
utilize your age properly, but i can guarantee you, making it part of your identity will make you far more depressed 3 years down the road and have done nothing meaningful than milking the fact that you were 16 and knew python
"surya how can you say this, didnt you form genzmafia with genz in the name"
i was going to tweet this, but:
- i use gzm ironically, never literally
- ive never used the term genz in an unironic way (i hope) and i think more organizations/people need to stop using the term, kind of getting old and cringey
