A Successful Launch Week
Hi all,
Thanks for helping make StepList’s launch week a success! I really enjoyed seeing the routines you all created, like:
Monthly bookkeeping tasks
Regular pool maintenance
Workout routines
Preparing e-commerce websites for sales
Sending out job applications…
…And preparing for interviews
Writing great pull requests
I’m especially excited by the diversity of the routines.
About half of activated lists were kept private, which surprised me a bit. I’ll be leaning into this behavior a bit, making private the default and eliminating the need to “activate” lists before using them.
Feedback & Fixes
The amount of feedback received was tremendous. If you’re building an app, I strongly suggest you take the time to integrate quick, accessible feedback forms into your app. It makes a difference.
Thanks to this feedback, an update was pushed out with the following fixes:
The Activity Feed is More Private: In previous builds of the app, the Activity feed was a hub to coordinate and monitor activity among your team. While these team features were pushed back, the Activity feed was never adjusted. A few users found the stream unsettling with all activity associated with public lists, including so we’ve dialed it back. Now the Activity feed only includes your activity and activity associated with lists you’ve invited people to perform.
Github Sign-In Permissions are Minimal: We were asking for read/write access to all your repos! That’s not right. Thanks to a few of you who noticed this and called it out. We only request minimal scope now.
The Onboarding List is More Concise: Only 22% of people completed the onboarding list. It was too much, too early. List creation has been broken out into a separate list and the onboarding list has been shortened.
Stray Bugs, Squashed: It wouldn’t be a launch without a timezone bug, thankfully very few users were affected. A extraneous Javascript library has been removed, speeding up page loads. And a few more.
Along with simpler list publishing, development over the next month will be focused on making editing lists more intuitive and the premium plan more prominent (I was surprised to receive multiple bits of feedback about this!)
Thanks again for trying StepList. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out (drew@steplist.app) with any questions, comments, or bugs.
Happy Mother’s Day,
Drew
