Margaret's Nearly Monthly News - January 2023
January has been a quiet month here at the Nearly Monthly News. As Hollywood still reels from the aftershocks of the WB/Discovery merger and braces for WGA contract negotiations to begin, I've been using the time to meet new people and connect with old friends.

From my Desk
My short story, "We Are Happy to Serve You" will be in the May/June issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction! Back when I was in college, F&SF was the first magazine to reject one of my stories, which makes breaking into this market especially sweet. Plus, this will be my first short story to first appear in print form! Start stalking your local bookstore now!
What I'm Reading and Watching
I've been making an effort to watch more movies recently, whether at home or in the theater. This month those included The Wonder (Netflix) and Women Talking (still in theaters). Two powerful stories about women envisioning different futures, with great performances throughout.
On the book front, I've been reading The Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison. I missed it when it came in in 2018, but reading it now, post 2020, feels particularly resonant.
From the Cutting Room Floor of the Duolingo Dystopia
Avian flu must have hit the Dystopia too, and Oscar has a long memory...
And That's the Nearly Monthly News!
What have you been cooking up this January? Looking forward to anything special in 2023? Drop me a line! Otherwise, I'll see you in February!
