Margaret's Nearly Monthly News - Feb 2023
Hello all, and welcome new subscribers! Glad to have you here during this rainy Los Angeles winter. No blizzards at this altitude, but let's just say my landlord replaced all my exterior doors and windows just in time.
From My Desk
This month sees my first short story in translation out in the world! "L'hiver est assis sur un banc," (French title, English story) first appeared in The Deadlands issue 8, and is now available in Spanish online in text and audio via Las Escritoras de Urras.
Lovely narration by Eleazar Herrera is complemented by beautiful sound design, and even with my rudimentary Spanish, it's a delightful listen.
In another treat for the ears, Bookburners, a serial in the vein of The Librarians or Warehouse 13 that I wrote with Max Gladstone, Mur Lafferty, Brian Francis Slattery, and Andrea Phillips is now the #2 fiction podcast on Apple! If you've been meaning to check it out, now is a great time to throw yourself into the story of a group of black-ops Vatican investigators charged with keeping magic out of the real world, who then begin to wonder if they're working for the right side. Narrated by the always excellent Xe Sands.
What I'm Reading and Watching
My project to finish books I've started continues, and that includes catching up with my F&SF subscription. A couple notable stories I've enjoyed from recent issues are: "Shotgun Lucifer" by Bennett North and "The Past is a Dream (The Launch of a Blacktopia)" by Maurice Broadus.
On the TV front, inspired by the recent passing of Richard Belzer, I've been rewatching my DVDs of Homicide: Life on the Street, and being quietly amazed how well this nearly 30-year-old cop show holds up in the current moment.
