Designing something you don't even know how to talk about
I just filmed a little 8½-minute video for y'all, which is a few things:
- A sneak peek at something I've been working on recently
- An invitation for ideas and feedback about some design challenges
- An example of the difficulty in making even a simple feature (one setting, basically) user-friendly
It's been a tricky thing to design this particular feature because I have a hard time even knowing what words to use to describe it!
That's why my video starts with a quick demo on my guitar:
If you have any thoughts or feedback, please hit reply!
In the meantime, I think it's time for me to work on a different feature for a few days so that a) I have an opportunity to hear from you all, and b) I can get some distance from it, and then hopefully come back later with more insight. Works at least half of the time...
'Til next time,
Luke
P.S. - As with most things, both this video and this newsletter are an experiment... in particular, I'm trying to go counter to my perfectionist tendencies by recording the video in one take with minimal editing, and writing this email like I would write to a friend, i.e. also with minimal editing. My inclination is to spend a lot more time to really polish everything up, but what ends up happening is I end up turning it into this "big thing" that I don't finish. Better to record the quick video and hammer out the quick newsletter, and save the perfectionism for the product itself. At least, that's the hypothesis.
