Sequences #1
I found Keisuke Goto and Hiroyuki Kato, two artists who collaboratively under the name Factlily, on ancient manga blogs back in the day. I don’t know much about them but I thought I’d share some of my favorite comic pages from them. These are from a comic called Turandot no Renkinjutsu-shi.
It’s hard to describe the element of whimsy thats embedded so deeply into these drawings. They’re incredibly formally elegant but I feel like you can see the artist/s following these cute or comedic caprices. I also love the organic flow in some of the architecture and objects, like the strangely sculpted piano the unicorn is playing above. There’s so much confidence in this unrestrained play.
One thing I struggle conveying in my drawings is scale! I love how easily the scale of these huge figures is conveyed without needing to insert small human-sized flecks to force the comparison. The lack of detail in the ground and the grandness of the carefully rendered sky helps with this aim greatly. Definitely pocketing this lesson for my own use.
In the scene above, this mech pilot suddenly shifts into a stately maestro conducting this beautiful absurd symphony of mech devastation (or maybe birth?) Whatever is happening, I love the repetition of conductors and orchestral elements in this collection of stories, both for dramatic or comedic effect. The way the figure glissades through this resounding but wordless abstract sequence is so wonderful.
These images are stuck in my dreams permanently.
