From Sloane, With Love #2
My new slice-of-life basketball graphic novel A Map to the Sun debuted yesterday! It’s a story about five young women of color forced to join their high school’s new basketball team. It’s about struggling to build friendships and understand others, complicated families, mental illness, generational trauma, rivalries, secrets and who and how we love others.
Here’s the beautiful book trailer animated by Tommy Rodricks with music by Too Much!
I’ve talked about the story more in depth at the places below:
Destiny City Roundtable ft. Leslie Hung, Blue Delliquanti and me
First Second: Behind the Panels
And some reviews:
And there’s more events on the horizon!
You can buy the book anywhere you buy books but ideally support your local comic book store if you can 💜
In other news:
I’m part of this sick comics anthology thats currently funding on Kickstarter! We’re calling it blood-fi, a collection of gritty scifi and fantasy stories! I’m stoked to be making a book with these amazing artists and am very hyped on my own comic idea.
What else has happened recently… I went to my first WorldCon and moderated an Indigenous Futurism panel with all-star writers Rebecca Roanhorse, Toni Wi, Sascha Stronach and Darcie Little Badger! It was such a dream to chat with them about our perspectives on indigeneity and how we grapple with it in our work. Hopefully I can share the panel recording soon!
Oh also Dr. Joyce Pualani Warren gave a short lecture on my comic PRISM STALKER recently which you can watch here: Embodying Ho’i Mai: Diaspora, Imagined Futures, and the Kanaka Maoli Graphic Novel (starts at :35)
And if you missed it, me and Leslie Hung have updated our podcast Salt & Honey! What’s Salt & Honey, you say? Salt and Honey is a podcast by two friends and full-time cartoonists, myself and Leslie (Snotgirl) who want to delve deeper into why they like what they like and hate what they hate. Each week, we explore different aspects of different comics (popular and obscure), as well as other popular media, including but not limited to movies and television. Our new episodes cover recent abuse in our field, building characters and what makes good romance.
And that’s it! Stay healthy and safe out there, friends 🤙🏾
