New Table UI
hey!
Based on some feedback I received, I recently switched up how tables are created. There's now a visual table editor that should make things a lot easier.
Here's a quick demo: https://youtu.be/tAuSiZ7Pacg (50 second video)
More thoughts on table creation UX:
- The keyboard still works for creating, however I want to make keyboard nav between cells in the table nicer using enter/arrow keys, but I haven't done that yet.
- I would love feedback on the UX of the creation UI
- I wanted to retain the "formulas are always shown" aesthetic that I'm using for normal cells... but horizontal space is pretty crunched
- I could also move the formulas up above (similar to how they were in the old formula based UX) and then only show the table results down below, but I really like having the column formulas inline with the columns.
Other updates:
- As shown in the video, there is now have visual way to add cells (you can still create any type of cell using keyboard only, eg to create a table just type table in as the formula)
- I reworked how we store cells so that cells are defined by parameters user enter in the UI instead of purely a text formula (this made it easy to allow UI creation of cells)
- I did a lot of hardening of table calculations, catching & fixing lots of errors and ensuring that errors that do get returned to users make sense
- For example, I reworked how calculations are done to handle circular dependencies in tables between columns aren't actually circular (eg. in the demo video, the total column reads from the interest column, but the interest column reads from the previous total value - it's not circular since interest reads from the previous total row)
I'm still constantly driving toward the first alpha release! I hope to be doing that in the next few weeks.
Stephen
