Happy International Podcast Day!
Welcome back to Good Tape! Today is International Podcast Day, a day where you should listen to your favorite show and subscribe to some new ones, and we have some great ones for you to consider. We're just a few days away from big launches of our shows' seasons. So this week we've got trailers for you!
News from the Studio
The Green Tunnel is getting ready to launch Episode 1 on October 6! In the first episode, learn about the clash between two of the founders of the trail that still has echoes in contemporary debates about what the trail is for and how it ought to be used.
Consolation Prize just released its Season 2 trailer! In the first half of Season 2, they'll be asking the question "What does Manifest Destiny mean for the consular service?" They'll be going to Tahiti, Monterey, and Honolulu to get some answers.
What we're listening to
RRCHNM postdoc Jessica Mack is listening to "A Black Musician Takes on the KKK," from A Slight Change of Plans. This episode features a Black musician who does take on the KKK, but not in the way you'd think. It's a great episode!
Moment of delight
Did you know that World Rhino Day was last week? Here's a fun fact for you about rhinoceroses: The first rhino to set foot on U.S. shores was sent home by Marmaduke Burrough, then-consul to Calcutta, in the 1820s. The rhino went to a circus; Burrough went on to more naturalist pursuits that resulted in the description for science of the lesser yellow-headed vulture (Cathartes burrovianus), and then ended up in Mexico as a consul. You can hear about his exploits there in Episode 1 of Consolation Prize. Here's a rhino drawing from Marmaduke Burrough's collections (archived at the University of Michigan Library).
