⧉ Solo sounds
Welcome to the forty-first issue of OVERLAP ⧉
Solo sounds
At first, it seemed extraordinarily quiet. But after a while, I started noticing a different set of sounds:
Chirping birds. (Are there more this year, or were they just drowned out by traffic before?)
Trucks rumbling out of the Midtown tunnel.
The soft hum of the electric kettle, creeping toward 200 degrees.
Ambulance sirens, heading south on Second Avenue.
A dog collar jangling in the hallway and the elevator door closing.
The tinny digital sound of voices from faces on my laptop screen.
Slow beeps of postal trucks backing into the depot.
Delivery bicycle bells and handcarts rolling over sidewalk seams.
The woman across the street yelling “Thaaaaank youuuuuuu,” the same way every night. An air horn on the next block over. And the claps drifting from windows, bouncing in the canyon between buildings.

As you may know, the rhythmic slosh of the dishwasher is my favorite sound. I’ve been hearing that a lot lately too.

Auntie Jess recommends:
CSAs. A fresh delivery of seasonal food is such a gift. And the weekly farm box has given me a good excuse to cook something outside my normal rotation of recipes.
