Welcome to the thirteenth issue of OVERLAP ⧉

Round trip
My office is moving to a new neighborhood. As I write this, I’m contemplating my first day in the Financial District and thinking back on two years in the Flatiron.
To and from 22nd Street: a journey in 22 lines
Rush-hour walks through Madison Square Park
in the snow
the slush
the rain
and the sunshine.
Seeing familiar strangers on the street
and seeing strange things on familiar blocks.
Dodging preschoolers on scooters
and wondering what they’re carrying in those tiny Montessori backpacks.
Running into a former D.C. colleague
and realizing we now work on the same block.
Leaving my apartment a few minutes early to stop for coffee
and leaving work a few minutes early to pick up film at the photo lab.
Staying at home when the steam pipes exploded.
Noticing a hawk eating a pigeon in the park
and thinking about the pigeons that crapped on my hair
(twice).
Remembering my first time in this park
drinking Shake Shack hot cocoa
after a 2009 blizzard.
Watching tourists take selfies with the Flatiron building
and thinking how lucky I am to be here.

Working on this newsletter has made me realize a common thread between my personal writing and my photography: I’m obsessed with places. What does it mean to be here, or there, or somewhere else? How can I describe how it feels? Will some combination of words and images be able to do this place justice?
I’d love to hear what you think — reply to this email or send a note through my website. You can also forward this to a friend or two and invite them to subscribe. If you missed a previous issue, all the archives are online.

Auntie Jess recommends:
1Password. I didn’t start using a password manager until last year. It makes daily life on the internet so much easier.
Mineral sunscreen powder. I can’t stand the feeling of oily sunscreen, especially on my face. Supergoop sells a refill for this powder, which also cuts down on packaging waste.
Baby carrots. One of my favorite (healthy!) summer snacks.
