Update
I have a new website: odomojuli.com, hopefully it will be populated with more content soon.
Sorry for the delay, I have been on the job hunt lately and its consumed most of my time.
I want to take a new approach to how these newsletters are written, more intimate - less infodumping.
I have a new album on streaming, I’m quite proud of it
A Pixel is Not A Little Square
As some of you may know, I am a (not-working) artist. I’m endlessly fascinated by different representations of digital media. This is a nice introduction into computer imaging.
I am endlessly an opponent of the AI hype train. I think it’s important to look back at the nadir of development and research in the field. We take for granted the reasons why it suddenly upsurged back into popular and commercial interest at our moral hazard.
The Logic of Scientific Discovery
This has a sort of unusual cover. If you’re unfamiliar, Popper is a very accessible entry into a philosophy of science. It’s full of delightful quotes and ideas that refine one’s argument of truth.
Principles of Algorithmic Problem Solving
In a different life I was a competitive mathematician. A part of me is still quite fond of metaheuristics, the theory of problem solving. Most of this is concerned with C++, which I’ve never cared for.
Tracking sex: The implications of widespread sexual data leakage and tracking on porn websites
Fascinating read on the implications and uses of prolific tracking technology. Ethical considerations of perceived anonymity but actually pseudonymity is interesting in its own regard.
[Surviving in Chessland)[http://tom7.org/chess/survival.pdf)
Chess is a sport I used to play a lot as a kid but lacked any partners to play with in my adulthood. Chess is not everyone’s cup of tea. This is a modern survey of a statistical flavor. It has very nice figures.
Investigating sources of PII used in Facebook’s targeted advertising
This is a bit too heavy on the statistics for my taste but the scientific experiments show very clear and concise cases in which privacy was breached with simple reproducibility. It’s good science.
This is a fantastic example of the dialectic surrounding frontend development and UI/UX lately. Companies are now hiring ethicists to lead these sort of endeavors.
