Newsletter Leaf Journal CLIV 〜 Bases on newsletters 〜

Welcome to the 154th edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. While our short posts are on hiatus for the time being, I published six full articles since I last mailed you. You will find links to our new articles along with links from around the web and other news and notes below.

Leaves from the week that was

Six articles? Is this September 2020 instead of 2023? Let us see what is new...

  • Broken Optical Audio Cable Door "Fix" (I think my sticky note fix is rather clever)
  • On Barry Bonds' IBBs in 2006 and 2007 (One can infer why Barry Bonds was walked at an unprecedented rate as he posted unprecedented statistics from 2002-2004... but why did he continue to be walked at a historic clip in 2006 and 2007 when he was no longer a record-wrecking video game character?)
  • Grace Coolidge on Intentional Walks (On the baseball opinions of former First Lady Grace Coolidge)
  • Race-Ball: 19th Century Sport Review (Exactly as advertised, but I think I could have drawn more traffic if I left the context off the headline)
  • Thirsty Goose in Brooklyn Bridge Part: Part 1 & Part 2 (Again as advertised -- I split it into two articles because I decided that a single article with eight thirsty goose photos would have been unnecessarily heavy)

Newsletter Leaf Journal CLIII 〜 No-smoking newsletter 〜

Welcome to the 153rd edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. It was not a big publishing week at The New Leaf Journal, but I produced a few articles while also continuing to work on improving the site and its sister project, The Emu Café Social. Let us begin our week-in-review.

Leaves from the week that was

I technically published three new articles, but one was about our cache system serving some visitors a compressed page to download instead of the normal web page for 12 hours on Thursday. Technical issue update aside, my two full articles were fairly long.

  • Middle school restroom smoking (Settle in for a story of a one-time incident in my middle school that resurfaced in an unexpected way when I was in high school)
  • The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses hair dye (You can glean from the cumbersome title that we have a new update in our ongoing series on anime hair color)

Newsletter Leaf Journal CLII 〜 Too many projects 〜

Welcome to Newsletter Leaf Journal 152. The Newsletter Leaf Journal is the official newsletter of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. I had a busy week with site administration -- although not all of it had to do with The New Leaf Journal (I will explain in our Notable Leaf Journal) section. But despite the side projects, I published several new articles and made a few adjustments to what I hope is your favorite perennially virid online writing magazine.

Leaves from the week that was

I published three new full articles.

  • Two Visual Novel Midsummer Kasumis (I did not realize before reading Midsummer Haze and A Midsummer Day's Resonance for reviews that the protagonists shared the save first name)
  • Surviving Megidolaon Spam in Persona 3 (Revisiting past video game trauma and triumph)
  • Local Avatars and Redirecting Gravatars (My adventures in starting a new WordPress site led me to discover a small way to reduce third-party requests)

Newsletter Leaf Journal CLI 〜 Midsummer newsletter 〜

Welcome to the 151st edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. August is in the books, but I stepped up our publishing pace after a few slow weeks to bring the month to a proper conclusion. Below, I share our week's worth of posts, links from around the web, our new most-visited statistics, and other news and notes.

Leaves from the week that was

I published six new articles since mailing Newsletter 150. I suppose that is a decent enough rebound from a one article week (even conceding the month-in-review post only barely counts).

  • Pumpkin Spice Makeup Removal Wipes: I am not an expert on makeup or makeup removal, but I could not resist the opportunity to opine on an interesting product seen at Marshalls.
  • Midsummer Haze - Visual Novel Review: If you think I am exaggerating when I say that I had to re-do the same scene 43 times to advance in this visual novel so I could complete my review, you will find in my review that this is no exaggeration.
  • Finding Manatsu no Kagerou: This is a companion article to my arduous Midsummer Haze review. Here, you will learn why actually being able to run Midsummer Haze involved a story in and of itself.
  • The New Leaf Journal Twtxt Feed: Learn how we made The New Leaf Journal more friendly to a small number of niche hackers.
  • August 2023 at The New Leaf Journal: Maybe I should defy expectations with one of these month-in-reviews.
  • A Midsummer Day's Resonance - VN Review: My proverbial feature article of the week, notwithstanding that my misadventures in Midsummer Haze may be more entertaining for those who did not endure them.

Newsletter Leaf Journal CL 〜 Newsletter monument 〜

Welcome to the 150th edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of the prennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This week's newsletter (nice round number) comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. While this week was light on publishing (we have a stronger week ahead), I did make a few changes to The New Leaf Journal that may be of interest to some readers.

Leaves from the week that was

I published one full article and three short posts. Sparse, yes. But to be fair, my full article was long.

  • Coolidge and Harrison in Bennington
    N.A. Ferrell. August 20, 2023.

Calvin Coolidge described having seen then-President Benjamin Harrison give an address in Bennington, Vermont, when Coolidge was in college. Coolidge's description of the event was characteristically eloquent. In this article, I search for accounts of the festivities that Coolidge witnessed.

  • The problem with remaking Twitter (This is a short post in my growing collection of articles against the tendency to clone major social media)

  • New Leaf Journal (Maybe) Back on Bing (We're definitely back on Bing as of August 26, 2023, but results in terms of visitors vary)
  • Remaster of Riviera: The Promised Land (Thoughts on a re-make of an interesting JRPG I played a few years ago)
  • Return of our SEO Framework sitemap (Bing is being difficult, so I switched back to our prior sitemap to try to make things easier for it)

Welcome to the 149th edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. This week was light on new article publishing, but I have a decent selection of new pieces to share in addition to our usual links from around the web, links from our archives, and some interesting site news and notes.

Leaves from the week that was

We published two full articles since mailing Newsletter 148.

  • Game FAQs Guide For Game Boy Golf (1990)
    N.A. Ferrell. August 12, 2023.

I was looking for information about Nintendo's 1990 Golf game for Game Boy (why not?). It was like 2004 all over again. The only hope was Game FAQs.

  • On the Death of Robbie Robertson
    Victor V. Gurbo. August 13, 2023.

Victor V. Gurbo returns with a post on the life and legacy of the late Robbie Robertson.

Welcome to the 148th edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. Leaves from the week that was

I published one new article since mailing newsletter 147.

  • Trash pick-up vehicle on Brooklyn Bridge
    N.A. Ferrell. August 10, 2023.

After a slow two weeks of publishing, we returned to a normal publishing schedule last week. Below, we review our most recent posts, links from around the web, and other news and notes.

Leaves from the week that was

We published five new articles since mailing Newsletter 146.

  • Basquiat Forgeries Made With Alarming Ease
    N.A. Ferrell. July 29, 2023.

Wherein I ponder the implications of how easy it was for frauders to create convincing Basquiat forgeries.

  • Anime Case Against Japan's Population Loss
    N.A. Ferrell. July 30, 2023.

Our Justin and Justina dialogue duo returns. Justin questioned reports of Japan's population decline with his own unique logic.

  • July 2023 at The New Leaf Journal
    N.A. Ferrell. July 31, 2023.

  • The Last Nintendo Wii Games
    N.A. Ferrell. August 1, 2023.

Newsletter Leaf Journal CXLVI 〜 Waning Moon 〜

Welcome to the 146th edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official writing magazine of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. While it was not a busy week at The New Leaf Journal, I easily surpassed our publishing output of no articles last week. Thus, you can expect a more traditional newsletter below with our most recent articles, links from around the web, and some surprising news and notes.

Leaves from the week that was

I published two regular articles and three leaflets/leaf buds in the previous week. First, I present the articles.

  • Hallmarks of Former Service Members
    Nicholas A. Ferrell. July 23, 2023.

A story from my college days about how the professor inferred that one student in his class was a veteran.

  • DuckDuckGo in the Bing Pond
    Nicholas A. Ferrell. July 28, 2023.

A new essay on the tangled relationship of DuckDuckGo and Bing. Note as usual that you should not use either search solution to find The New Leaf Journal since its being de-indexed by Bing means it is also invisible to DuckDuckGo.

Newsletter Leaf Journal CXLV 〜 Barren tree 〜

Welcome to the 145th edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell.

This will be an unusual newsletter since I did not actually publish any articles this week. I was busy with work and plagued by sinus issues. I do have an article in the pipeline, but I have not gotten around to publishing it yet. (Next week will likely be on the quiet side as well, albeit busy compared to a week of no publishing.) But we need not let the lack of publishing at The New Leaf Journal hinder its newsletter cousin...

The Old Leaf Journal

While I did not publish new articles, we can dig into the archive for some good reading. Maybe this was just a chance to give our older content a chance to shine. Let us go with nine classic (or so I tell myself) New Leaf Journal pieces.

Newsletter Leaf Journal CXLIV 〜 The NLJ didn't forget its newsletter 〜

Welcome to the 144th edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal, with content too amazing for Bing and DuckDuckGo. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. I published a decent number of regular articles this week (not too many short posts, however), and we will review those below in conjunction with links from around the web and other news and notes.

Leaves from the week that was

I published five normal articles.

  • Installing Non-Listed Programs in PlayOnLinux: A step-by-step guide to running Windows programs with the help of PlayOnLinux (the guide is probably applicable to PlayOnMac as well)
  • The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses Ep1 Animation: I dive into an unexpectedly contentious debate about the animation style employed in episode 1 of a summer 2023 anime series.
  • Barbie & Oppenheimer without context: I only learned this was a meme after I began working on the article.
  • RSS for keeping up with MikroTik updates: Keeping my router's operating system up to date with the help of an RSS feed.
  • Japanese Language Env in Steam (Linux): I follow up last year's guide on configuring Japanese language environments in PlayOnLinux, Lutris, and Bottles with a guide to doing the same in Steam.

Newsletter Leaf Journal CXLIII 〜 Ben Franklin's favorite (maybe) 〜

Welcome to the 143rd edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. We had a warm week to begin July here in New York City. But weather aside, I published several new articles. You will find links to and descriptions of our new article along with our usual assortment of links from around the web and other news and notes.

Leaves from the week that was

I published four regular articles since mailing Newsletter 142.

  • Most-Visited NLJ Articles of 1H 2023
    N.A. Ferrell. July 1, 2023.

Many of the featured pieces on our 24 most-visited articles of the first half of 2023 will comes as little surprise to newsletter readers. But beyond the top 10, you will find a few articles which have not been mainstays in our weekly most-visited article rankings.

  • Basil Hall on Benjamin Franklin's grave
    N.A. Ferrell. July 3, 2023.

An 1829 account of a British explorer visiting the grave of Benjamin Franklin, with my own commentary, notes, and up-to-date information about the site.

  • The Eagle, the National Seal, and turkeys
    N.A. Ferrell. July 4, 2023.

We begin with a children's bedtime story for July 4 and conclude with Benjamin Franklin's thoughts on eagles and turkeys.

  • Mafia Social Media Over-Sharing
    N.A. Ferrell. July 7, 2023.

Instead of spoiling this article, which is accurately described by my headline, I will note that I am pleased with what I put together.

Newsletter Leaf Journal CXLII 〜Newsletter draft trade〜

Welcome to the edition 142 of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of the perennially virid online writing magazine, The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. We welcome July with today's newsletter, and you can expect some new leaf fireworks (or at least links to some of our 4th of July posts) to go with the usual assortment of links from the week that was, links from around the web, and other news and notes.

Leaves from the week that was

I only published three full articles since mailing newsletter 141, with one being our June review. In my defense, however, the combined word count of these articles was above average.

  • Should the Pistons have drafted Carmelo?
    N.A. Ferrell. June 26, 2023.

I examined an interesting question on the 20th anniversary of the 2003 NBA Draft. The Detroit Pistons lucked into the second overall pick thanks to a trade it had made in August 1997. The Pistons were unusual for being a good team, having won 50 games and made the Eastern Conference Finals the year before, picking at the top of the draft. The Pistons took Darko Milicic with the second pick ahead of three future hall of fame players (Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade). Mr. Milicic was traded by the Pistons in his third season after barely seeing the court. Conventional wisdom says that the Pistons should have drafted Mr. Anthony or Mr. Bosh with the second pick (Mr. Wade proved to be the best of the next three picks, but there is no evidence he was on the Pistons’ radar as their number two pick). I argue that conventional wisdom understates one complicating factor – the Pistons won the NBA Championship in 2003-04 after drafting Mr. Milicic over Mr. Anthony.

  • 1997 Otis Thorpe trade and the 2003 NBA Draft
    N.A. Ferrell. June 27, 2023.

I published this as a companion article to the Pistons-Anthony piece (it stands on its own, however). Here, I explain how exactly a very poorly conceived throw-away trade in 1997 would cost the Memphis Grizzlies (they were the Vancouver Grizzlies in `97) six years later the second overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.

  • June 2023 at The New Leaf Journal
    N.A. Ferrell. June 30, 2023.

    No surprises...

Newsletter Leaf Journal CXXV 〜 Winter in terms of leaves 〜

Welcome to the 125th edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal, the official newsletter of The New Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. Today’s newsletter will be unique in that there is very little New Leaf Journal news. The only full “article” I published last week was our February review – but I did publish a few short posts. I also drafted a few articles, but with work I did not have time to sit down and publish them. This means two things. A busy week to come and more extra newsletter content this week since I do not have much to share in the form of links to new things published at The New Leaf Journal. (Note: I am skipping the “News leaf journal” section this week because I did not make any changes to the site.)

This newsletter comes to you as always from the waterproof keyboard of the editor of The New Leaf Journal, Nicholas A. Ferrell. This week’s newsletter may be a return to normalcy after I used last week’s edition to repeatedly remind readers that my colleague and I, Victor V. Gurbo, rescued a pigeon. By a “return to normalcy” I mean that there will not be nearly as many reminders of our great feat of heroism. There will, however, be recaps of our newest articles, links from around the web, and other news and notes.
