I was this many years old when I learned about the history and etymology of the humble ampersand (&). Apparently it was originally a visual representation of the Latin “et” (as in et cetera), and was the 27th letter of the English alphabet for some time.

Wikipedia has a bit more around the typographic evolution of the ampersand as well.
