This Week in Coffee
Here's my weekly update of what's been happening in the world of coffee this week. It's a summary of new machines and any changes in the industry. This time of year there's little movement in the retail space but we're seeing lots of fun changes cafes and roasters. I write for for the industry and this is a summary of what might be useful for people on Reddit.
As always, comments and feedback is very welcome.
Industry
Jibbi Little is an amazing Sydney-based Q-grader famous for her amazing and unique latte art. Check out her Instagram.
I've visited these guys in London. They're not personally to my taste but it's nice to see people with a strong aesthetic - worth at least one visit if you can.
The % Arabica locations do have a beautiful clean look with pastel colours and a slick integrated feel. They draw a varied crowd with especially this people looking for a good-looking background on social media.
Equipment
I personally love under-counter espresso machines in commercial settings. They're great for workflow and they really change the feeling of a coffee shop. Glad to see new entrants into the market.
I'm not a big fan of Illy coffee. It's pretty bitter and very challenging to brew into a tasty espresso. In theory, this mirrors traditional Italian coffee but I think the reality is that it's just not very nice.
I'm pretty confident that some roastary out there is doing good work approaching celebrities and convincing them our beloved heros to put a face on a bag coffee. That said, Rumours is the greatest album of all time and my chimp brain is convinced that maybe I might buy this coffee.
Misc
You can see all the listings here. A few standard grinders with some quite boring automatic drip machines. A couple of Mazzer Super Jollys going for 25$ each right now look good and three Fetco automatic drip machines.
