Weekly Recommendation: Zurück in die Zukunft by LaFee
Hey there!
Here’s your weekly German media recommendation from Monoglot Anxiety. This time, it's the 80s throwback cover album Zurück in die Zukunft by LaFee
But first, a quick note from me:
I hope you enjoyed Austria week — I'm actually still in Austria, but I figured it's about time to return to business as usual. I can't torture y'all with dialect forever. You might see some Austrian stuff sprinkled in going forward, but German media is back on the table.
If you want to complain about (or perhaps, compliment) my recommendations, you can get in touch on Twitter @monoglotanxiety or by shooting an email to hello@monoglotanxiety.com. You can also get in touch, support the blog, or send a one-time donation from the Buy Me A Coffee page.
With that all out of the way, on to the recommendation...
Zurück in die Zukunft by LaFee
I've tried to avoid recommending German dubs and covers in the past, just because I thought yall would be more interested in "authentic" German media. But covers are fun, they're popular in Germany, and this particular cover album is really fun. Zurück in die Zukunft is a throwback cover album by the German pop singer LaFee, who first made a name for herself as an edgy teenie star in the early 2000s. Zurück in die Zukunft is an 80s retro tribute album full of covers of songs like "Material Girl" and "Take On Me" ("Halt mich Fest") and it's just pure fun. There's also a surprisingly good cover of Falco's "Rock me Amadeus" that Lafee signs as a "duett" with the original Falco recording.
You can listen to the album on Spotify.
Bonus recommendation: a LaFee original that didn't age well
I discovered LaFee from one of my German exchange partners. She was listening to throwback playlist called "2000er lit sh*t" that one of her friends made to keep motivated while working on a home improvement project late at night when a song came on that really, really didn't age well. That song is called "Virus" and it's not just bad because it'd be bad form to say "I wish you get a virus" in 2022. She told me about the song during our last chat and at first I thought it was something in English — but no, for once a piece of questionable pop culture is not my people's fault. If you want to see pre-comeback LaFee, check out this song that didn't age well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om8hPCVF9LM
That's all for this week,
