Weekly Recommendation: "Über den Wolken" by Reinhard Mey
Hey there!
Here's your weekly German media recommendation from Monoglot Anxiety. This time, it's "Über den Wolken" by Reinhard Mey.
"Über den Wolken" by Reinhard Mey
Released in 1974, "Über den Wolken" is an oldie but a goodie. I can never get through this sweet little song about airplanes without smiling at least once. And though I've always liked "Über den Wolken," there's something about it that hits closer to the heart now that the pandemic has transformed air travel from a commonplace banality into something of a small miracle. The song feels bittersweet even though it was never intended to be.
There's no official music video, but there is this recording from 1974 on YouTube (and a few more recent performances). Check out the comments section if you have time---the comments sections for this type of old German song tend to be super wholesome.
You can find the song on Spotify and iTunes.
About the artist
Reinhard Mey is a German singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the early 1970s, when his music was largely perceived as a fresh and welcome addition to a pop-music landscape dominated by Schlager. He's sometimes been the subject of criticism, often because of the idealism of his songs, but Mey remains one of the most popular musicians of the loosely-defined Liedermacher scene and he's still writing all these decades later. "Über den Wolken" is Mey's most famous song.
That's all for this week. Until next Friday,
