Weekly Recommendation: Reclam Hörbücher
Hey there!
Here’s your weekly German media recommendation from Monoglot Anxiety. This time, it's the free audiobook collection of Reclam Hörbücher.
But first, a quick note from me:
I'm looking for folks interested in writing guest posts for my blog this summer (and beyond!). If you'd like to share your language learning journey with other readers, please shoot me an email!
I'm also switching the newsletter cadence to Wednesdays at 8:00 EST after this one, let me know if there's a time you'd prefer this show up in your inbox.
Reclam Hörbücher
Many language learners have the goal of one day reading classic literature in their new language. If that sounds like you, you'll love this week's recommendation. Reclam Hörbücher offers free audiobook versions of dozens of German classics, from Ödön von Horváth's novella Jugend Ohne Gott (which I recommend if you don't know where to start) to Goethe and Kafka.
You can listen to Reclam's entire library of free audiobooks by big names in German lit on [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/artist/0RWFrsnMdkB0EeZd0io3MN), [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8Cms40aI0rBdAJ6npAOB3g) and more. Just google "Reclam Hörbücher" or search for them in your audio app of choice.
A bonus of reading (or listening to) the classics
But Elise, you say, I don't like classic literature. Fair. I hear you, and I'll recommend something more exciting next week. But in a brief defense of engaging in a bit of book snobbery: the classics are classics for a reason, and investing a bit of time and effort in reading them pays dividends — not only in terms of language skills, but in terms of cultural literacy. Just think about how often English-speakers casually refer to ideas out of high school lit-class-classics like Shakespeare's plays or Jane Austen's novels… even if they've only read the Sparknotes. Strange as it may be, wading old books is a pretty great way to understand more new jokes.
Get in touch!
As always, if you want to complain about (or perhaps, compliment) my recommendations, you can get in touch on Twitter @elisecutts or by shooting an email to hello@monoglotanxiety.com. You can also get in touch, support the blog, or send a one-time donation from the Buy Me A Coffee page.
That's all for this week,
Elise from Monoglot Anxiety
