Weekly Recommendation: "Rave On" by Blumentopf
Hey there!
Here’s your weekly German media recommendation from Monoglot Anxiety. This time, it's for the hip hop song "Rave On" by the hip hop group Blumentopf.
But first, a quick note from me:
Want to share your language journey on my blog? I'm looking for people at all stages of language learning to share their stories on my blog this summer and beyond. Specifically, I want to share your stories with the first foreign language(s) you learned because you wanted to, and not just for school.
If you're interested in writing a guest post, just shoot me an email!
"Rave On" by Blumentopf
I've never really been a hip hop person, so you have my partner to thank for this week's recommendation. Blumentopf is one of the most recognizable names in German hip hop, known for its "Storytelling" style lyrics that tell clever, often humorous stories about everyday life or hit on political issues (one song in particular stands out in my memory for its direct criticism of the Bush administration, for instance). Rave On is the group's most popular song on Spotify, and I — rap-averse as I am — can actually listen to it without pressing the skip button. So even if you don't like hip hop, give it a try.
A quick tip for listening to rap in German, or really for listening to music in any of your target languages: pull up the lyrics and read along with the song. It's amazing how seeing the text can immediately make the words in a song "pop out" clearly in your head.
Austria does hip hop, too... (Bonus recommendation for Kroko Jack)
I usually try not to recommend really Austrian stuff since it's so absolutely incomprehensible. But bonus recommendaitons are fair game! Austria has its rappers too (including, depending on your definition, Falco), and one of them is Kroko Jack. Kroko Jack is from Linz, not far from my partner's hometown in Upper Austria, and raps in Upper Austrian dialect.
Give it a listen and see if you can even tell that it is in German 😅🇦🇹
