Weekly Recommendation: ORF.at
Hey there!
Here’s your weekly German media recommendation from Monoglot Anxiety. This time, it's the Austrian public broadcaster ORF's news site, ORF.at
But first, a quick note from me:
Want to share your language journey on my blog? I'm looking for people at all stages of language learning to share their stories on my blog this summer and beyond. Specifically, I want to share your stories with the first foreign language(s) you learned because you wanted to, and not just for school.
If you're interested in writing a guest post, just shoot me an email!
ORF.at
This week's recommendation is going to be a straightforward, quick one — I owe you all that after last week's word-dump over Dark. The Austrian public broadcaster ORF runs a great news site that, despite its outdated web styling, offers a good way to get a beat on what's happening in that other German-speaking country, and in the world. I like ORF's coverage of "international" US news as it tends to be rather sober on topics that are impossibly incendiary here. They also often provide excellent live-tickers to cover developing situations, as they did during the early days of the Russia-Ukraine war. Navigating the website can be a bit annoying, though.
Only in Austria...
Coming from a massive country like the US, I really enjoy seeing what kind of news makes ORF. There are the big, headline-grabbing stories of course, political scandals, pandemic concerns, immigration, armed conflict, etc., but there are also stories that seem like they could have been pulled straight from a small-town local newscast. Think tales of dogs getting rescued after wandering off in the mountains and — no joke — the theft of 245 freshly-planted apple trees (value: 3,000 Euro) from a field in lower Austria.
