Weekly Recommendation: Methodisch Inkorrekt
Hey there!
Here’s your weekly German media recommendation from Monoglot Anxiety. This time, it's the science podcast Methodisch Inkorrekt
But first, a quick note from me:
Want to share your language journey on my blog? I'm looking for normal folks at all stages of language learning to share their stories on my blog this summer and beyond. Specifically, I want to share your stories with the first foreign language(s) you learned because you wanted to, and not just for school.
If you're interested in writing a guest post, just shoot me an email!
Methodisch Inkorrekt
If you've been following me or this newsletter for a bit, you know that I love nerdy stuff. This week is another one of those nerdy stuff weeks.
Methodisch Inkorrekt is my current favorite science podcast. Hosted by two physicists, the show strikes a nice balance between unscripted conversation and structure, with planned topics providing a bit of a scaffold to the otherwise freely flowing conversation. The hosts discuss interesting new scientific papers, news from the world of science, and — a favorite topic — conspiracy theories. If you thought your country was the only one with crackpots, think again. Methodisch Inkorrekt does a good job of discussing some of the hot scientific (and unscientific) issues in Germany and the German speaking world. The hosts have a great dynamic and discuss science in very understandable terms that ensure that the podcast is entertaining and understandable to everyone, not just science geeks.
Find Methodisch Inkorrekt wherever you find podcasts.
Conversational podcasts are a gold mine for language learners
One of the struggles of learning a language on your own, without being immersed in a speaking community is getting enough exposure to real, conversational speech. If you're learning one of the "big" (or popular) languages, it's pretty easy to find scripted audio of all kinds out there these days. But people talk differently when they're delivering information to a microphone than they do when they're joshing around with their buddies. If you've only ever listened to scripted content, finding yourself in a real conversation can be a shock.
So, what's the solo (or just introverted) language learner to do? Unscripted conversational podcasts like Methodisch Inkorrekt offer a quick solution to the how-do-I-learn-how-people-talk-without-actually-talking-to-people problem. Because they're not scripted, these podcasts are a lot more like natural conversation than a typical podcast is. Listening to them is a bit like eavesdropping on people at the cafe, no cafe (or invasions of privacy) required.
