Hey there!
Here’s your weekly German media recommendation from Monoglot Anxiety. This time, it’s the YouTube channel Cinema Strikes Back.
Cinema Strikes Back is a German YouTube channel run by 3 guys (and a dog) who make videos about pop culture—specifically movies, television, and comics. Their content runs the spectrum from top 5 lists to reviews and video essays. There’s a podcast associated with the channel, too. The channel can be pretty Buzzfeed-y in the “10 reasons why XYZ!!!!” sort of way at times, but hey, I’ve made list posts. None of us are pure.
Check out the channel on YouTube, or start with the video essay on the morality of Lord of the Rings if you don’t know where to start.
I think Cinema Strikes Back is alright, the real reason I decided to recommend them this week is that I think the subject matter of the channel could be a good fit for certain German learners. If you like pop culture, a pop culture channel could be a good way to dip your feet into “real” German—it’s just easier to follow along in a new language if the discussion centers on characters, brands, and stories you’re already familiar with. Movies and comics are an accessible topic and you’ll recognize a lot of English names and words sprinkled in thanks to the global popularity of English-language media. And, bonus: the videos have German subtitles that weren’t written by a robot.
That’s all for this week. Until next Friday,
Elise from Monoglot Anxiety
