Weekly Reccomendation: Servus. Grüezi. Hallo.
Hey there!
Here’s your weekly German media recommendation from Monoglot Anxiety. This time, it’s the podcast Servus. Grüezi. Hallo. from Zeit Online.
Servus. Grüezi. Hallo.
Described as the “trans-Alpine podcast” of Zeit Online, Servus. Grüezi. Hallo. is a weekly political podcast hosted by three reporters, each representing one of Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. The hosts discuss politics and society in the three countries, often with the aim of using cross-border comparison to make better sense of current events in Germany. I’ve especially enjoyed the episodes about differences in pandemic policy across the German-speaking world—like this one on the “Skikrieg” (ski war) of winter 2020-21.
Check out the podcast on its official website. It’s also available on Spotify and iTunes.
A political podcast for B1-C2 learners interested in going beyond the German-German bubble
If you’re not at least a little familiar with German political vocabulary, this podcast might be a bit of a reach. But for intermediate to advanced learners, I think it’s a fantastic way to dip your toes into the world beyond the German-German bubble that learners so often get trapped in. Although they’re often overshadowed by or lumped in with their bigger cousin, Austria and Switzerland are quite different from each other and from Germany once you get past the superficial level of a shared language and a shared mountain range.
That’s all for this week. Until next Friday,
Elise from Monoglot Anxiety
