Micael Widell Newsletter #47
Captain’s log
February was a pretty “meh” month for me. My kids were sick at home a lot (in Sweden, the month of February is even called VABruary by parents of small kids, because VAB is the term for staying home with sick children :). So I had less time than normally for work. Also, the weather outdoors wasn’t the best for photography: dark, cloudy, windy, humid and cold.
But now I’m looking forward to March and beyond with great anticipation! This month I’m going to Lisbon to try to find some insects for a couple of upcoming videos :) And towards the end of April we should start seeing some insects outdoors here in Sweden as well. The days are getting brighter and longer, and spring is approaching!

Featured Macro Photographer
My jaw dropped a bit as I stumbled upon @macrofying on Instagram. Extremely cool short video clips, and the nicest macro videography I’ve seen in a long time. Not sure exactly how they are made, but I would guess a combination of footage and photos at different magnifications, carefully merged in video editing to create these cool effects. Definitely visit the profile and watch a few of the video clips! Inspiring!
Aurora times
I read recently that the reason we are seeing so many auroras this winter, is that the sun is approaching the top of a cycle of activity. These tops are every 11 years or so.
This means that we will see even more and stronger auroras next winter, and it will peak in the winter of 2025. So now might be a perfect time to get into astrophotography!

We had a beautiful aurora over Stockholm the other day. As always, Ralf Lukovic made some of the nicest captures of it.
