Micael Widell Newsletter #38
Captain’s log
May was a very nice month for me and my photography. Summer is finally here again, and the insects are back after a long winter. I did a Laowa 60mm photography walk. I tried my Godox V350 flash and compared it to my Meike MK320. I did some freehand macro photography with a $20 microscope lens mounted on a 3d printed adapter! And I got inspired by a member of my Discord chat server, to make an Ecosphere – a closed ecosystem in a jar.
I also did a philosophical video for my Patreon supporters, explaining how my three sabbaticals that I have taken throughout life, has changed my life for the better and made me find my Youtube/photography career.

Slide film
During May I once again spent some time admiring the red colors of Kodachrome film. And inspired by these special and beautiful red tones, which sadly do not exist in any of today’s analog slide films, I tried to find out which films have the most similar look to Kodachrome.
What I came up with is that Ektachrome and Velvia 50 are good candidates, but that they aren’t as warm in their color tones as Kodachrome was. ColorPlus has a similar look and warmth to it though, but that film stock is not a slide film, so it lacks that special slide film look. Despite how expensive it is to buy and develop slide film, I decided I must try it once in my life, so I bought a roll of Ektachrome and Velvia 50, which I am currently shooting.
I also picked up a Canon EOS 600 in mint condition for $40. This camera is nothing short of amazing. Earlier I have only done film photography with really old cameras like the Mamiya RB67. But this Canon, which even accepts modern EF lenses, is so damn fast and easy to use, that it feels like using a digital camera. Even the autofocus is pretty decent! Wonderful experience shooting with this camera, and incredible value for money. If you want a powerful and easy to use analog film camera, the Canon EOS 600 comes warmly recommended from me. Nice way to post images to Instagram
Have a look at this instagram post that I stumbled upon. I think this way of framing and arranging a small series of photos to fit Instagram, is absolutely beautiful, and I intend to try it myself. A very nice way to present a small slideshow consisting of both tall and wide shots.
