Federated networks, Twitter and more
So it happened, Twitter got sold.
Unsurprisingly, Mastodon sign ups all way up. It seems like mastodon.social is doing what it can to limit signups to the de-facto "silo".
I predicted this in 2009 when I launched the GNU social project as a spin-off of GNU FM, after seeing the network effect that Libre.fm created.
In an effort to offer some alternative in this climate, I'm starting in earnest to get a newsletter that's functional again. This is the first post of that effort. I've also imported the last 16 or so year old my various blogs. There's a lot of junk in there. Over time, I'll take some time to curate some of these into something useful.
I hope to also use this platform to discuss my thinkings on software, internet culture and technology.
As ever, I send these things from my personal address. You can hit reply and let me know what you think.
Best,
matt
