February 2020: Happy Birthday!
Hi all, and welcome to the first issue of the new HRM Making Comics Newsletter. My name is Scott Marshall, I am the organizer of the meetup, and like you, I am sometimes afflicted with the need to make comics.
Thankfully, there is a place where we can do just that, together, once a month or so. It's the HRM Making Comics Meetup, and it convenes roughly once a month at Radstorm. And speaking of that:
Our next meetup is Saturday, Feb. 15, 11AM to 1 PM!
Can't make it to a meetup? Not a problem. We also have this here newsletter, which will arrive in your inbox every month with important deadlines and dates and bits of advice and works in progress by you and your fellow cartoonists.
If you want to submit some of your work for the newsletter - or a classified ad if you're looking for a collaborator, or anything really, email Scott Marshall at hrmmakingcomics@gmail.com.
Still not enough? You've got the comic making fever, friend. And you're not going to feel better until you see those pages in print and in an environmentally responsible PDF. And the best way for you to do that is to contribute to Proxima, our group zine. Read about it here at the new website: http://heyscottmarshall.com/makingcomicshrm/page5.html
The third issue of Proxima will be put together at a special meetup on Saturday, April 11th. But since we need a few days to put the digital files together and then print the master pages, that means:
The deadline to contribute to Proxima #3 is April 9th!
All right. Now that that is out of the way, hi! I'm Scott Marshall, the organizer of the HRM Making Comics Meetup, and it was my brilliant idea to change from using Meetup.com to this newsletter and a proper website for the group. It's been a lot of hurried work but I think it's going to be good.
What would help immensely is if you, dear cartoonist or friend of HRM comics, could visit the new site, kick the tires a bit, and let me know if you encounter any issues or have any suggestions. If you are a local comics creator, I especially want to add your name and contact information to the list of local comics makers.
The other pages can all use fleshing out too, so if you have any suggestions at all, I'm all ears!
All right, I think I have jabbered at you enough for one night, and I have to get some sleep, so I will leave you with a couple of useful links that have come my way recently:
- Advice from writer Michael Melgaard on applying for Canada Council grants.
- DCAF vendor applications are open! The show will be on Sunday, August 16th from 11AM to 5PM. Once again I have applied for a table for the group, and we will figure out some shifts for members who want to run the table and help sell stuff made by group members. If you would like to apply for a table for yourself too, here is the form. Applications are due by May 11.
That's it! Welcome to the newsletter! Welcome to the HRM Making Comics Meetup 2020 Edition! See you Feb. 15th at Radstorm, 11 AM!
