A semi-regular newsletter about structures, patterns and shapes manifesting through design and technology and how they impact art, science, culture and society.
This newsletter is more digressive and conversational than my external writing and design education work; more spontaneous and undifferentiated than my personal website; less trigger-happy and obstinate than my social media posts.
My creative practice and research involves narrative systems, generative methods, symbolic AI and graph databases applied to games, interactive fiction, worldbuilding, net art and open source tools. My professional background is in software architecture, web applications, UI and product design.
Themes and topics covered will sometimes skew towards these particular research areas and design problems that I’m working on, but more likely will be commentary, criticism and explorations of events, memes, symbols and systems, picking up on major creative, technological and social issues that are disputed by experts or misinterpreted and mangled in popular culture.
More specialised design and technical material including tutorials and case studies might occasionally bubble up to the surface, but I’ll keep that to a minimum (or at least ringfence it so that it’s skippable for those of you who don’t always need to know or care how the sausage is made). I also plan to include occasional explorations of retro technology, software, design and engineering history, and interviews with people whose work I admire and respect.
