Moon Chapels, Hymn Madness, and a thought about Vocation

Graphē

Friends,

Happy New Year / Feast of the Holy Name!

A little over one year ago, in tandem with the deletion of my social media accounts, I brought back this newsletter as a form of “slower but still social” media.

Well, I have taken the “slower” part quite seriously…

It has been a minute, but I thought it may still be worth sending out these thoughts, links, and updates.

Here’s to a still slow but perhaps more steady newsletter in 2020?

Food for Thought: Jobs Shape You

Years ago I co-taught a class called “Vocation & Calling” to a group of high school Juniors and Seniors.

Here is a thought I haven’t been able to shake in the years since I taught the course, and that (one day) I’d like to write about more:

One of the missing links in talking about vocation is the effect a career has on shaping an individual. We often consider if we are a good fit for a given career, but don’t often reflect on how entering a career will change us as a person.

Grammar for Thought: Affect/Effect?

Hymn Madness

In case you missed it over the summer, the Hymn Society has officially crowned a “Greatest Hymn of All Time.”

Two notes:

  • Can’t complain about the winner!
  • The way the brackets were built is a fantastic mini-lesson in the nature of Sacred Music.

Moon Chapel

As part of their commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, America Magazine unearthed (yes, pun intended) a 1967 journal article that explored what a chapel on the Moon could look like.

Updates + Links to Recent Work

Aside from transitioning into a new role at my school and church, here is some of what I have been up to.

You can listen to some of my recent sermons, or to read an article I wrote for Living Church about questions we should be asking about Abortion.

Incarnation North officially launched in August. It was a joy to see years of work (mostly by others) come to fruition!

I was ordained a Priest on September 28th!

Thanks to Dickie Hill for the Ordination photos!
