The Putney VCS 3? Call of Cthulhu? What do _you_ use JD for?

Hey there Decimals. It's been a while, sorry I'm not more chatty. I'm just not naturally the sort of person who strives to send more email. :-)

A message from a Decimal the other week got me and Lucy talking over a beer, and I had an epiphany.

I've always assumed that this thing would be most useful at work. Frankly I just assumed that's where I'd make money from it. So I've written it with a project manager in mind. And, sure, it's useful at work. But I don't think that's where most of you are using it.

I think most of you are at home, doing whatever makes you happy. Our emailer is a sound artist, so she's organising her sounds. Someone on the Discord recently was sorting their 'Call of Cthulhu' roleplaying PDFs. Another guy has a collection of bikes: does each bike get its own ID, he asked?

Product release: The Johnny.Decimal Workbook [D41.00.00]

Hey there, Decimals. I wrote a new thing! This is the first result of me quitting my job, and I’m really proud of it. Team Decimal (Lucy and I) have spent hundreds of hours on it over the last couple of weeks.

It’s the Johnny.Decimal Workbook: ‘a guide to setting up a single-project system and working the Decimal way.’

https://jdcm.al/14.02/

In this step-by-step workbook, I’ll take you through the entire process of how I set up my Johnny.Decimal project systems.

There's a blog, and a few other tweaks [21.02.002]

Hey all. Quick one, I got the blog [22.01] set up. Just a few posts now to see how it looks but I’ve got a backlog of stuff I want to put up there so look out.

I said last time that I’d quit my job. I’ve still quit, it’s great. But that means no money until I figure out how to milk the corporate teat.

So if anyone feels amazingly generous, you can now support me [02.01].

Righto, I’m going to go and figure out how to build my LinkedIn company profile. Can’t say I really love LinkedIn but I think that’s where my future customers are. Also I think posting content there that isn’t just how to be an inspirational leader in these five easy steps with this ChatGPT-generated list might be a breath of fresh air? Who knows. If you’re a LinkedIn expert gimme a shout.

I quit my job [21.02.001]

Hi there. It’s been a while. A few things have happened.

I quit my job to work on Johnny.Decimal

I didn’t love the job, and a late-Sunday-night conversation with my partner Lucy turned in to me resigning the next morning. Hardly spur of the moment – this has been coming for some time – but not what either of us had ‘planned’.

The turn of events saw me free by Tuesday afternoon. Laptops and badges handed in. Quite surreal.

Tomorrow is the weekend

Tomorrow -- arbitrarily, Wednesday -- is the weekend.

I quit my job yesterday morning. An impromptu but overdue decision that I came to with my partner lying in bed on Sunday evening. The reason: Johnny.Decimal. This is now my job*.

Things happened quickly: it's Tuesday evening and I've been 'offboarded'. Laptops and badges are handed back. I'm free.

So then we thought, why are the weekends those two days? Who says so? We decided to see what happens if they're different.

Johnny.Decimal now has a forum

We now have a Discourse forum at forum.johnnydecimal.com. Please join us, there's a lovely crew there already. :-)

There's also a Discord for chat, but everyone (including me) seems to prefer the Discourse as it's a bit gentler on the soul, and the knowledge there is more persistent. So this might go away, we'll see.

That is all, I hope you're all healthy and happy.

2021 J.D update

Programming note: this post is going out as both an email to my subscriber list and as a post on the new blog. Exactly the same words, I’ll just copy/paste the markdown that makes the blog post in to an email. (I’m not attaching images as the email will go out as plain text.)

This is the first email – ever! – to my list. Its intention is to tell you that the blog is a thing now, and that you’ll find content there. Future posts will not be emailed. You may subscribe via RSS, and I’ll post a notice to @johnnydecimal on Twitter when a new post goes up. Or you can just leave the page open and hit refresh like a maniac. Them’s your options, take your pick.

If you’re reading this via the blog post and aren’t aware that there’s a mailing list, there is. You should sign up – you’ll get about an email a year from me and it’ll be something you don’t want to miss. The next one will almost certainly be me telling you that I’ve got some software ready for you to use. Read on for more details of that. But if you don’t want to, totally cool, email is a curse. (You’ll never miss any news if you keep up with the blog.) ✌️
