❄ And snow on and snow forth...

Late To The Party

the year is almost over, and SO MUCH is happening. Check out the workshop and my giveaway! But before that, some machine learning!

The Latest Fashion

  • Do you look at Pytorch tensors to figure out what’s wrong? Try lovely-tensors to get an intuitive overview instead!
  • I have been reading more about git recently. This Idiot proof git workflow was quite interesting to follow!
  • I found this intersectional AI toolkit quite fascinating! A good resource to keep around and make AI more equitable.

My Current Obsession

Are you part of the early gang? Then you’re reading this right before the workshop I organised with Valerio Maggio and Gemma Turon about “Real-world Perspectives in Machine Learning for Science”.

It’s part of Pydata Global that is still going on. Tickets are “Pay what you Can” and benefit Numfocus. So we’re not making anything from it, although I managed to get some speaker gifts through my fellowship at the Software Sustainability Institute. I didn’t want to set up a workshop without remuneration, but they’re obviously an honorarium for tax purposes. (Especially with the holidays and the cost-of-living crisis going on.) We invited two guest speakers Mike Walmsley from the University of Manchester and Goku Mohandas from madewithml.com, a resource I love and shared before. I really hope a few people will show up, as I think we put together an excellent workshop.

See you there! realworld-ml.xyz

Thing I Like

I have been trying out the air fryer now, and it has some true potential. The sync mode lets me finish two parts of a meal simultaneously, which takes a lot of mental load out of the cooking process for me. Might be life-changing. We’ll see!

Hot off the Press

We have been updating the machine learning reproducibility tutorial for Pydata Global.

In Case You Missed It

I have helped another colleague set up VS Code. My never-ending crusade to slowly convert people towards using developer tools that make coding easy continues. Here are my 10 favourite VS Code extensions.

Data Stories

I’d love for you to check out the awesome projects people have already submitted for my latest class on AI Art.

Since I’m slowly panicking about the workshop, I will go prepare for that now!

Question of the Week

  • What is the vanishing gradient problem?

I’d love to see what you come up with. Then I can include them in the next issue!

Tidbits from the Web

  • This is an interesting take on how that “Math Test” changed Hank Green’s perspective on humanity
  • In view of recent events, this interview with a museum security expert was insightful.
  • What looks like ordinary maps is so much more and tickling my brain.
