[100 STRAIGHT DAYS OF GRUB] 8 March 2024
Hope you are ready for a long rambling edition to commemorate this wonderful milestone...
I've officially drawn a Grub every day for 100 days straight—584 in total have been recorded. The dailies started on November 30th and I've published every single Grub through this newsletter (a few were consolidated into one e-mail during my Xmas road trip to San Diego and back). I always say, don't wait until New Years to start something, just do it. And to be honest, I never usually follow that advice, but I'm glad I did this time.
Got up at 3:30 AM this morning to hit the road and drop my wife off at the airport. It was the first time either one of us has flown out of (or even been in) Sacramento.
Napa is in this weird hole where there aren't really any "close" airports. I was used to Seattle and Chicago, where, no matter what, it'd take me about 30 minutes. However, there are still three major airports surrounding us in SF, Oakland, and Sacramento, (plus the small one in Santa Rosa that's way too expensive and San Jose that's ~90min away). All three are just over an hour away depending on timing and traffic. I know for some people that's probably nice, but when you are used to zipping in and out on drop-offs and pick-ups it makes a huge difference.
Anyways, when I got back home, I threw on an eye mask (yes, that's an eye mask on the Grub, not a Vision Pro), and tried to get some additional shut-eye. It never really works out in these situations for me though. Instead, I spent a couple hours feeling hungover on bad sleep.
Now I'm just sad as I wait for my wife to return home on Sunday. Weather is beautiful, so I cracked open a bottle of Rosé earlier (I'm wishing it was a Cab right about now though...)
Been tinkering and thinking about foofaraw some more, which, I'm sure everyone here is tired of hearing...
I published a small piece on how the money from [+] subscriptions will be put to use, and am working on one about the history of foofaraw and where I want to take it.
Adding a "letters" section a la every magazine and Last Week's New Yorker Review—so if have thoughts (enjoying/hating/etc.) about anything I'm covering send 'em my way. I need to decide if I'll place them within each section or just consolidate at the end...
I might get someone to contribute to the Monday issues to cover games, which would be cool. Games and Books are two areas I'd love to include, but just don't have the bandwidth to keep up with. Sooo many books sitting unread next to my bed right now...
Been thinking about the "off-season" break I plan to do twice a year. Would be cool if I could get some people (or a person) to fill in as a guest editor during that time to write up what to watch/listen/read once a week... Could be current or past stuff...
Lastly, going to try to get ahead on foofaraw while my wife is away this weekend. Hopefully that helps bring up the quality and reduces the strain on Monday's when I rush to hit publish while juggling the day job.
