Welcome, welcome, welcome.
Second issue of the year and the first with all four sections, albeit, some are a bit bare as the new year continues on at a glacial pace in media. And a day late to boot!
I promise to only do this twice per year, but this is the point in the newsletter where I ask for your support in offsetting the costs of running foofaraw. My goal is to continue adding even more paid contributors in the future, so the Friday issues start to feel more like a magazine with mutliple contributions ranging from essays, reviews, and columns to art pieces, comics, and fiction.
I've set-up a KoFi page where you can make a one-time donation or, following Manuel Moreale's lead, you can contribute at the $1/month tier. Lastly, on that same KoFi page, you can sign-up for my new Little Letter of Nonsense, where I send a physical letter, mini-zine, and grub drawing every month, all in black & white. It's $3/month (US only) to start. You can subscribe now to lock in that price before it is raised in March.
Both of those membership tiers also come with dumb little useless stuff like access to a "super-secret" discord channel, where you can ask me for recommendations or help you decide what to read/watch next, and discounts on commissions and future zines...
foofaraw will always be a money losing endeavor for me (and free to all), but with your help, I can add more cool stuff without losing too much money.
Lets get on with it, shall we?
This is a bit of a middling week of new shows. Nothing huge coming out. Two murder mysteries that could potentially be swings and misses and one fascinating looking animated musical. At least it's an easy schedule to keep up with to start the year.
New Shows
Death and Other Details (Hulu) — 16 Jan
This wasn't originally something I planned to check out, but it's got director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) and Mandy Patinkin. And ~murder~. But early reviews are not looking good...
Hazbin Hotel (Amazon) — 19 Jan
This has been on my radar for awhile now. I guess this started as an animated pilot four years ago and had a full season spin-off on YouTube already. I'm fascinated by this.
The Woman in the Wall (Showtime) — 19 Jan
Ruth Wilson (His Dark Materials) and Daryl McCormack (Bad Sisters) in a dark looking murder mystery, that should at least be worth an episode based on the performances alone.
The Schedule
Days based on streaming availability for the majority of people
Tuesday
Criminal Record (Apple) 1:3
Death and Other Details (Hulu) 1:1-2
Friday
Hazbin Hotel (Amazon) 1:1
The Woman in the Wall (Showtime) 1:1
Sunday
Monsieur Spade (AMC) 1:2
True Detective (HBO) 4:2
I'm trying to be a bit more picky with the streaming albums I add to my library and I haven't added any of these yet. They are all solid, but none of them really popped on first listen for me. I plan on giving them some more time during the week to see if that changes. They are roughly in order of my first listen preferences.
Some Releases
No Place Like Home — Vacations
Second — Dead Best
Big Sigh — Marika Hackman
Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations — The Vaccines
Down There! — Folly Group
Real Humans — Sunship Balloon
Big — Horsees
I was never a big fan of Transformers and GI Joe growing up, but I've become fascinated with the new Energon Universe from Skybound and Cobra Commander looks absolutely gorgeous. Plus we have some of the best Image books getting released this week with What's the Furthest Place From Here?, The Deviant, Phantom Road, and Kill Your Darlings.
No. 1s
Cobra Commander (Skybound) #1
The Weatherman (Image) #1
Avengers: Twilight (Marvel) #1
Chip Zdarsky writing Avengers in an alternate reality? This could be superb.
The Best
What's the Furthest Place From Here? (Image) #17
The Deviant (Image) #3
Phantom Road (Image) #8
Kill Your Darlings (Image) #5
Black Hammer: The End (Dark Horse) #5
The Enfield Gang Massacre (Image) #6
The Rest
Superman (DC) #10
Nightwing (DC) #110
Fantastic Four (Marvel) #16
Catwoman (DC) #61
X-Men (Marvel) #30
The Kitchen (Netflix)
Only one movie even worht mentioning this week and it's on Netflix featuring Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) making his directorial debut with this film set in a dystopian London. It feels like it's going for a mix of Athena and The Creator, but I'm skeptical it gets anywhere near half the quality of those.
Yeesh... a lot of asking for money and not much good content this week. You can tell I know exactly how to run a newsletter. Back with hopefully some better stuff next week.
Stay sane,
