Living the life of the “already” but “not yet” (Announcements for 3 July)

Hi Everyone,

On Wednesday we considered Romans 7 where the Apostle Paul expresses the profound conflict that every Christian finds inherent in his life in Christ, namely, sin dwells in us, but we are thankful that Christ also dwells in us. “Thanks be to God through Christ our Lord!”

Jeff and Lydia Bergman will soon move to Dayton, OH, so you will want to say “goodbye” to them this Sunday or next.

Sincerely,
Elder Lemen

Update from Northern Ireland

Hi everyone,

I hope camp was a good week for everyone who went. I heard that Jonathan was playing the banjo.

It is cloudy and windy here, and it rains almost every day. Quite a contrast from home.

We had a great trip to the Netherlands last week. Joanne's Oma is turning 90 later this year, and she is in good form. She and a few other relatives joined us for Joanne's birthday last Thursday. We really enjoyed spending the Lord's Day with the van Houdt family. In their town, everyone is closed for Sunday and the only activity is going to church morning and evening. The church has been there since missionaries displaced a site of pagan worship about 1000AD. The oldest part of the current building is from 1300AD. The church followed the local lord in joining the reformation, and it is still going! I appreciated the Psalms they sang, because that (and the benediction) was the only part of the service that I could decipher.

We had car trouble back in Northern Ireland, which ended up with us buying another car this week. There is nothing like a complication to help you make friends. We had people all over Northern Ireland that we don’t know trying to come up with a car for us. We are glad for those friendships, but we also hope this car will make it until the end of our trip.

I got to bring greetings from the OPC to the EPC presbytery meeting on Tuesday. It was a pleasure to meet about 30 ministers and elders. Halfway through the meeting, the moderator said: “it’s a good time to put the kettle on for tea,” and a few minutes later we took a break for tea and biscuits! A lot of the churches here are small, but the denomination is closely knit.

Next week, I will join their ministers' fraternal, and give a presentation on biblical sexual ethics. The following week is the start of two youth camps. These are an important and a beloved ministry—a lot of the adults in the church grew up attending these in the summer. Alie is excited to go the younger kids' camp, and I am speaking to the older kids each day for a week. About half of the kids attending will be from unchurched backgrounds. I will be speaking on the I AM statements in John.

My parents arrived in Northern Ireland last week, and we met up with them the night that we got back from the Netherlands (they kindly picked us up from the bus stop). Dad was preaching through the week at a church in Magherafelt (about an hour’s drive west of where we are living near Hillsborough). With our new car all sorted, we attended yesterday evening. It was great to have a chance to hear my dad preach. We also got to join for tea afterwards! The service started at 8pm, and it was after 11 when we finished tea, but it was actually still a little bit light outside.

That’s a little update from us. We miss everyone there, and hope you enjoy God's blessings on your worship and fellowship tomorrow.

Released from the Law (announcements for 12 June)

Hi Everyone,

On Wednesday we considered in Romans 7 how God’s permanent moral law, which is summed up in the Ten Commandments, reveals our sin and therefore our need for Christ, the Savior of sinners.  But conviction of sin is not enough.  It is not conversion.  But when we are saved, as redeemed people we are released from the condemnation of the law, and when we obey God’s law, we bear spiritual fruit.

Our Pastoral Intern, Mr. Jonathan Bartlett, is preaching this Sunday.  Next Sunday, 19 June, our former pastor, Prof. Ryan McGraw, will fill the pulpit and we will celebrate the Lord’s Supper during the AM service.  An offering for the work of the Deacons will be taken during the AM service.

Sincerely,
Elder Lemen

Slaves to Righteousness

Hi Everyone,

On Wednesday we considered how Paul explains in Romans 6 that everyone is either a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness – there are only these two options.  If we are slaves of sin, the only reward that we can anticipate is death.  But if we are slaves to righteousness, this brings greater sanctification and the gift of eternal life. As we contemplate our life in Christ, may we be eager to bear fruit in Christian service.

Our Pastoral Intern, Mr. Jonathan Bartlett, will preach on Sunday morning.  Please pray that Jonathan and Maddie will quickly adjust to Sunnyvale life.

In the evening, Mr. Ben Ciavolella will fill our pulpit.  He is the pastoral intern of Delta Oaks, Pittsburgh, CA.

Boasting (announcements for May 8)

Hi everyone,

In Romans 3:23-26, Paul explains the Gospel. God sent Jesus to redeem us from sin by dying in our place, so that we can be freely forgiven and accepted by trusting in him.

In verses 27-31, Paul applies the Gospel by showing that it excludes boasting. The Gospel is all about a free gift of grace, so boasting is "against the rules." The Gospel's "rules" are different from the rules that unbelieving Israelites thought they were living by.

They thought the Bible was a "law of works"—perfect obedience deserves a prize, and winners can boast in their success. Actually, the message of the Bible is a "law of faith" that tells us to trust in Christ, and humbly thank him for everything we have.

After Darkness, Light (announcements for May 1)

Hi everyone,

At prayer meeting this week, we looked at Romans 3:21-26. This is the break of dawn after two long chapters describing the sins of the whole world.

The first truth in this text is that God is righteous. This is good news, because it means that the terrible moral and spiritual darkness of our world is not the whole story. It also seems to be bad news, though, since we ourselves are part of the problem. God, being righteous, will not fail to condemn our sin.

The second truth is that God forgives sins. Through the whole Old Testament, God was showing “divine forbearance” by “passing over” many sins. He continues to do this now, because offers to justify sinners by his grace as a gift.

Problem, solved (announcements for April 24)

Hi everyone,

This week at prayer meeting, we looked at Romans 3:9-20. These are grim verses that show the problem of human sin in stark reality. We learn that:

1. Sin is a universal problem.

Sin affects everyone. The Jews sinned against God’s law written in the Bible. The Greeks have sinned against God’s law written on their hearts. “None is righteous, no not one.”

Faithfulness (announcements for April 10)

Hi everyone,

At prayer meeting this week, we looked at Romans 2:17-29. Paul summarizes the whole passage in his description of a “true Jew” (we could just as well say “true Christian”) at the very end of the chapter: “His praise is not from man but from God.”

Rather than expand on this point myself, I will share an article, entitled “Seminary Faithfulness.” The author is Dr. Jonathan Master, president of Greenville Seminary. He gives good guidance about how the Church should pray and work for long-term faithfulness, so that we will have the praise of God.

The article is a good reminder to pray for Greenville Seminary too. Our former pastor Ryan McGraw teaches there. Jonathan Bartlett, our returning pastoral intern, is there as well. He is expecting to graduate in just a few weeks, before traveling here to begin his internship.

Excuses, excuses (announcements for April 3)

Hi everyone,

This evening at prayer meeting, we looked at Romans 2:12-16. This passage shows us two groups of people, and their relationship to God’s law.

First, some people sin without knowing God’s law. Paul talks about people “who have sinned without the law.” Greeks and Romans and Babylonians never had the law of Moses, but they still sinned. Today, many don’t have a Bible or a knowledge of God’s law, but they still sin.

Second, some people sin even though they know God’s law. Paul says that some “have sinned under the law.” This would include the Jewish people before Christ, and all those since Christ’s time who have grown up in the Church or heard God’s word preached or explained to them.

According to works (announcements for March 27)

Hi everyone,

This week at prayer meeting we read Romans 2:6-10, a passage that teaches about the final judgement. We considered a few points:

First, God will judge “according to works.” That does not mean that God will give everyone exactly what they deserve. If that were the case, everyone would be condemned. Rather, it means that there is a real difference in the works of Christians and non-Christians, and that our works will be considered in God’s judgement of us all.

This leads Paul to give a basic description of Christians and non-Christians. Christians are marked by “patience in well-doing.” They don’t give up our good works, and this is because we are motivated to seek “for glory and honor and immortality.” More simply, they are people who “do good.” On the other hand, unbelievers “are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness.” More simply, they are people who “do evil.”

Backwards (announcements for March 20)

Hi everyone,

At prayer meeting this week, we read Romans 2:1-5. This passage shows us how sinners always get things backwards.

First, we get our own judgement backwards. We pass judgement on others in order excuse ourselves, but then we actually condemn ourselves, because we do the very same things (v.2).

Second, we get God’s judgement backwards. We don’t let anyone escape our judgement, but somehow we think we will escape God’s judgement (v.3).

Sin-tolerance (announcements for March 13)

Hi everyone,

At prayer meeting, we read Romans 1:24-32. Some people have bodies that are gluten- or lactose-intolerant, which can be a serious problem. We all have hearts that are sin-tolerant, which is a deadly problem.

The big sin here is homosexuality, which is where our society’s deadly sin-tolerance is most obvious. We must resist the world’s pressure to tolerate this sin.

On the other hand, we should not only focus on the sins of other people. Even as we maintain biblical teaching about the sins our culture approves, we must remember to search our own lives for the sins that we tolerate.

Longing (announcements for February 27)

Hi everyone,

This week at prayer meeting, we read Romans 1:8-14. In verse 11, we get a personal glimpse of Paul’s love for his fellow Christians: “For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift.” There are many reasons to look forward to gathering for worship on the Lord’s Day. This is not the highest one, but it is a very important reason: when you see your fellow Christians, you have the opportunity to exercise your spiritual gifts towards them in love.

The result of sharing our spiritual gifts is mentioned at the end of verse 11 and in verse 12. We will be “strengthened” and “mutually encouraged” by the faith that we share. Let’s pray today that this will be the outcome of our gathering tomorrow.

Sincerely,

The Obedience of Faith (announcements for February 20)

Hi everyone,

At prayer meeting this week, we looked at Paul’s aim in ministry, which was to bring the “obedience of faith” to the nations (Romans 1:5). This is a good way to pray for our missionaries who preach the Gospel in new territory. The nations of the world need to believe in Christ, and submit to his Word.

This is also a good way to pray for our ministry here. We need good doctrine and good practice. Often, there is resistance to one or the other – whether that resistance comes from our society, our families, or our own hearts. Sometimes sinners want to believe without serving, and sometimes we want to serve without believing. But we must always aim to glorify God in both ways.

So, pray for our Sunday worship, our family life, our friendships with each other, and our witness to neighbors and friends, that we would be diligent in promoting the truth of the Gospel and obedience to God’s commands. Real faith leads to obedience, and true obedience only grows out of living faith in Christ.

Daily life (announcements for Feb 13)

Hi everyone,

At prayer meeting this week, we reviewed the picture of the church’s daily life in Acts 2:42-47. Here are a few prayer requests that we gathered from that text:

  • That we would be enthusiastic in attending and participating in public worship on the Lord’s Day.
  • That we would be generous and grateful in our daily life.
  • That our deacons would have wisdom to provide for needs in the church.
  • That we would enjoy extending and receiving hospitality.
  • That worship would be part of our daily life, whether at home or in church activities.
  • That God would add to our number through conversions.

These could easily be items of thanksgiving, because God has already been providing these blessings. Our prayer is that he would continue to bless us in these ways more and more, for his glory.

Sacrifice (announcements for Feb 6)

Hi everyone,

At prayer meeting this week, we read Matthew 26:1-16. This is where the story of Jesus’s death begins. The text shows us two characters, each with a very different part in the story of Jesus’s death. First, we meet a woman who spends lavishly on perfume to prepare Jesus’s body for burial. She knew (v.2) that Jesus was going to die soon, and no price was too high to honor him for his sacrificial and saving love.

The second person we meet is Judas, who (along with the other disciples) thought this was a great waste of money. They said that they wanted to use it for the poor, but it seems that this was a cover for selfishness—at least in Judas’s case. He was so disgusted with this impracticality that he betrayed his master for the paltry sum of thirty silver coins.

Here’s a simple question for you to think about: Are you like this woman or Judas? Are you willing to honor Jesus at any cost, or are you only willing to follow him until someone else offers you a better deal?

Walking Wisely (announcements for January 30)

Dear congregation,

At our annual congregational meeting on Wednesday, I shared some reflections on Ephesians 5:15-21. The theme of this text is “walking wisely in evil days.”

As we consider the year ahead, and the long-term direction of our church’s ministry, we need to prepare for evil days.

We must not think that ours are the only evil days. Paul wrote these words a long time ago, and many periods in Church history have been more challenging than our own. Still, in certain ways, the days are more evil than they used to be. We need to be ready, which means that we need to be wise.

Why no fruit? (announcements for Jan 23)

Hi everyone,

At the last couple of prayer meetings, we have been talking about fruitfulness. This week, we looked at a few reasons given in the Bible for why we do not bear good fruit.

1. Materialism

In the parable of the soils, the “thorny ground” is the heart of someone “who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful” (Matthew 13:22).

Types of Fruit (announcements for January 16)

Hi everyone,

I wrote a little bit last week about the importance of fruitfulness. That raises a few questions, and I want to address one now: What is fruitfulness, exactly? “Fruit” is a vivid picture, but it would be good to know specifically what “fruit” is.

Here are some specifics.

1. The fruit of repentance.

Fruitfulness (announcements for January 9)

Hi everyone,

At prayer meeting this week, we read Mark 11:12-26. There are two stories in this passage, related to each other. On his way into Jerusalem, Jesus curses a fig tree that has only leaves and no fruit. Then, he goes into the temple and throws out the businessmen who were crowding out the worship of God. Returning home from the city, Peter notices that the fig tree was already withered up!

The theme of this passage is the importance of fruitfulness. We should be always be bearing fruit for God, not merely displaying nice-looking religious foliage. This was the problem with Israel at the time: right there in the temple they were yielding the foliage of sacrifices, but there was no fruit of worship because everything was being done for commercial gain. As he had cursed the fruitless fig tree, now Jesus cursed the fruitless temple. A few days later, the temple’s veil was torn in two. A few decades later, the temple was destroyed.

So, we must be bearing fruit for God, otherwise we are under God’s chastisement, or even judgement. But how can we? It seems like an impossible task to understand and apply the Scriptures, grow in holiness, exhort others to do the same, evangelize, help the needy, build churches, conduct worship, influence society, and on and on.

Not in Vain (announcements for December 26)

Hi everyone,

This is our last announcements email of 2021! I have been thinking about the fact that only a year ago we were waiting for our tent to arrive. That seems like an eternity ago.

Our encouragements this year have been many: new members, new children, new converts, days of fasting, opportunities for outreach and service, and a strong financial situation. We have had some challenges too: saying goodbye to those moving away, witnessing our society’s increasing hostility to God, and bearing each other’s burdens of loneliness, grief, unemployment, spiritual trouble, and illness.

God’s gifts of encouragement are little sermons, preaching the truth of 1 Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” The challenges are little sermons, too, preaching the truth of John 15:5, where Jesus tells us that “apart from me you can do nothing.” Of course, these two texts are really saying the same thing, each with a different emphasis: our labor is not in vain in the Lord, and it is in vain apart from Christ. Either way, the key thing is that we are working out of our union with Christ: relying on him, obeying him, and lovingly aiming to please him.

An Eternal Weight of Glory (announcements for November 28)

Thank offering

This Sunday, the thank offering is one way that we plan to express our thanks to God for his goodness to us. I neglected to mention this last week, but on this coming Sunday the offering we receive will be designated for the OPC’s denominational ministries, known as “Worldwide Outreach.” The ministries supported by Worldwide Outreach include Foreign Missions, Home Missions, and Christian Education. You can watch some videos about each of these ministries here.

If you are not able to contribute to this week’s offering, you can still designate a gift until December 12.

A Talking Donkey (announcements for November 21)

Bible Reading

Old Testament

This week, our Bible reading plan (Adults’ Version, Kids’ Version) includes the story of Balaam the false prophet. Though Balaam was very powerful to curse Israel, God was more powerful to bless Israel. And God used a donkey to rebuke him! That’s humbling.

Walking in the Wilderness (announcements for November 14)

Hi everyone,

This week, our Bible reading plan (Adults’ Version, Kids’ Version) takes us beyond the Red Sea and en route to Mount Sinai. It turns out that life after redemption is not a walk in the park! More like a walk in the wilderness. Thankfully, the God who brings us out of slavery is also able to satisfy our hunger, quench our thirst, and overcome our enemies.

Jesus gave much the same assurance to his disciples the night before his death, which is recorded in detail in John 13-17. After his death and resurrection, life would not be easy, but they would have the love of the Son who gave himself for his friends, the comfort of the Spirit, and the promise of eternal life with the Father. By faith, they will overcome the world. These promises all become reality when Jesus suffers arrest and trial (ch. 18), death (ch. 19), and then rises again (ch. 20) to renew his disciples in their service to him (ch. 21).

Kids, this week you’ll be reading in John 5 about how Jesus healed a disabled man. Here are a few things to think about:

Signs (Announcements for Nov 7)

Hi everyone,

This week, our Bible reading plan (Adults’ Version, Kids’ Version) switches two one OT chapter per day and two NT chapters per day. In the Old Testament, we are reading about the plagues God sent on Egypt. These plagues were acts of salvation to free his people from slavery, but they were also signs to display his power as the true and living God and to humiliate the false gods of Egypt.

Life-transforming grace (announcements for October 31)

Hi everyone,

Happy Reformation Day this Sunday!

This week, our Bible reading plan (Adults’ Version, ) takes us from the end of Genesis into the beginning of Exodus. In this portion of Scripture, all the odds are against the promises we read about in Genesis. Israel is far from the land, and surrounded by prosperous and strong enemies. The offspring of Abraham is threatened through murderous working conditions and the murder of infant boys. Yet God moved heaven and earth (literally!) to keep those promises and to glorify himself as the true God, against all the false gods of Egypt.
