Happy Monday!
In the US today is Labor Day and most people have a day off but here in the UK, it's a regular Monday. We had our version of it (called Summer Bank holiday) last week. We've been having some very pleasant weather the last couple of days. Here are some things I've had on my mind.
I started listening to the Growth & Grit podcast a few weeks ago. It is produced by Stanford's Business School and it focuses on entrepreneurs in South Asia and Africa and "each episode is a unique opportunity to hear about recent discoveries, get practical business tips, and learn proven leadership strategies from some of the world’s leading thinkers and practitioners." It is fascinating, I listened to one epsidoe about navigating corporate structure within a family business and the most recent one I listend to was a Masterclass on the investor landscape in India.
Sidenote: In general, podcasts have been my favorite discoveries of the past few years. I always knew they existed but never really thought about them much until late 2019 when a friend recommended a comedy-based one. Before even listening to a single one, I was immediately sold when I learned I could download episodes onto my phone at home so I didn't have to use my data while out. These days, I have a podcast for every mood and time of day, history ones for bedtime, ones about activism, etc. The only problem I have right now is that the podcast world seems to be dominated by males (almost all white) so I am appreciative of any recommendations outside of these 'norms'.
"You want somebody in love with the problem, not with their specific solution." I heard this phrase or something similar recently (no idea where, probably a podcast) and I immediately gravitated towards it. The speaker was talking about work, but this seems applicable everywhere. It's so frustrating speaking to somebody who is so in love with a plan they created that they can't see the validity of other solutions.
At the beginning of last winter, I decided that I would not go through another British winter and optimistically made a plan to spend winter 2021/2022 somewhere much warmer.
I have been really into Ava Max's music this week, particularly Kings & Queens.
Has this been a long weekend for you and if so what did you get up to?
Catch you later,
Mandy
