Announcing: Introduction to Music Criticism Seminar For Emerging Women and Non-Binary Writers
I’m excited to share that I’ll be offering a four-week introductory seminar to music criticism for emerging women and non-binary writers on Zoom this March!
One of my favorite things about being an editor is helping writers push themselves and develop their voices. I’ve written so much music criticism — and edited, probably, even more — and want to make use of my knowledge in a way that opens up our community.
I’ve taken my fair share of online fiction classes and have gained so much valuable knowledge from working writers. I don’t see the same thing available for music criticism, which is something many people learn on the job. I want to change that.
For the first three weeks of class, I’ll give a slideshow lecture about a form of criticism (lists, reviews, or longform) and hold a class discussion about a previously assigned reading. Then we’ll do an in-class exercise and hold space for questions. After week 2, each student will choose a song to blurb for a reading and share session at our last class meeting. There will be additional, optional, writing exercises which can be done between classes; I’ll send feedback to students who send me their work before the next week’s meeting.
This class will meet on Tuesdays, March 9-30 from 5:30-7:30pm PST/8:30-10:30pm EST
Class schedule:
Week 0: Half-hour pre-class session for introductions and setting community agreements (Note: meet on March 2, 5:30pm-6pm PST/8:30pm-9pm EST)
Week 1: Blurbs and lists
Week 2: Reviews
Week 3: Longform (Essays! Anniversaries! Ye olde hot take!)
Week 4: Pitching + class reading
Registration info:
This class will cost $175. Most online writing classes cost around $350. I’m happy to work out a payment schedule for students who can’t immediately pay in full.
There will also be two scholarships available for Black writers with three or fewer professional publications, not including free newsletters, blogs, etc. Please get in touch if you would like to fund additional scholarships :)
Class capacity is six students for this inaugural run. There must be a minimum of three students for the class to proceed.
refund policy: full refunds minus $25 enrollment fee available for cancellation until feb 23 @ 5:30pm PST; 50% refund available for cancellations within one week of class commencement on march 2 @ 5:30pm PST
