Five links for your inbox from this week.
1. Facebook fine + data transfer ban
You might have heard that Facebook has been fined €1.2bn by the Irish Data Protection Commission. As Johnny Ryan from the ICCL says, “a billion-euro parking fine is of no consequence to a company that earns many more billions by parking illegally.”
The real story is that Facebook has to “suspend any future transfer of personal data to the US” and “[cease] the unlawful processing, including storage, in the US of personal data of EU/EEA users transferred in violation of the GDPR, within 6 months”.
This will hurt Meta much more, and it’s good to see enforcement that targets the underlying business model, not just pointless fines that are likely considered a cost of doing business.
2. User Inyerface
“A challenging exploration of user interactions and design patterns.”
3. Tech Independence
From Derek Sivers:
“Learn a few of these basic tools, and you can run your own private server on any computer forever, for the rest of your life. Host your own website and email. Keep your own contacts and calendars synced with your phone. Back up and sync your photos, movies, and music to your own private storage. No more subscriptions needed.”
4. Authentic Sans
A nice sans typeface to add to your bookmarks: “[Authentic Sans] aims to subvert the Eurocentric standards of typographic quality and refinement.”
5. Download Directory
Need to download a directory from GitHub? Enter the GitHub folder URL here and press [Enter].
Projects + other things
-
I’m currently booking projects from August onwards. Get in touch if there’s a project you would like to discuss.
-
I’m now offering Power Hours, a simple, low-risk way to get an outside perspective on your website.
-
I recently revoked my 1% For The Planet membership. I’m continuing to donate 1% of my business’ turnover, but this will now be split between projects that take action against climate change and organisations that fight muscular dystrophy.
-
My Unoffice Hours are available every other Wednesday. Next slot: 31st May.
