The International Symposium on Media History and Theory is a trading zone where scholars from communications, design, humanities, arts and science can present current research, creative pieces, reflections and critical positions in areas such as software studies, media archaeology and history, speculative and critical design, media art, multimedia, and visual studies. The aim is to extend media analyses to physical media, technical operations, techno-scientific principles and the design of the infrastructures behind texts, images and sounds.
The last two years marked an acceleration of the digitisation of various areas of our society. These were two years of unprecedented immersion in an environment mediated by images and algorithms. From our family relationships to our contact with the outside world, many aspects of our lives were suddenly contained in a series of digital transmissions and remote access. It was a large-scale change whose consequences are yet to come but which has transformed not only artistic expressions and the products of communications and design, but also scientific and academic processes and our working environments. It is necessary to think about new disciplinary connections at a time when immersive and artificial worlds are appearing on the horizon, proposing new forms of social relations and media production.
In its second edition, the International Symposium on Media History and Theory invites proposals for papers and creative works that analyse, discuss or present aspects at the intersection between the three proposed axes: immersion - artificiality - remote.
