Hope you’re staying safe this week. We’ve seen a few questions in the slack asking about pensions and savings as a lever for change. As ever, there is the wiki (https://climate-tech.getoutline.com/doc/best-practice-uk-adGJl2YGLU) , but another idea to experiment with is change the law to set new defaults. If you’re in England, there’s an interesting campaign on called Digital Rebellion by Extinction Rebellion UK, to simply call up the Bank of England and politely chat to them about their policies of supporting investing in fossil fuels (https://extinctionrebellion.uk/act-now/campaigns/digital-rebellion/) . You don’t need to be a fan of XR to find the tactics interesting.

In our last newsletter, we started collecting links and resources to help fellow CATs process some of the “climate dread” and emotional toll around the most recent IPCC report. This week, a new report on the state of the climate was published by the IPCC, and to put it mildly, it’s pretty bad news. This week, I want to bring your attention to Hack The Climate (https://hacktheclimate.devpost.com) , a hackathon starting March 22nd and lasting till March 26th. What’s exciting is that nonprofits set the challenges. You’ll be working on real problems with a clear and immediate benefit to the world. For example, MapBiomas (https://mapbiomas.org/en?cama_set_language=en) track deforestation alerts for the Amazon rainforest. Of the 150,000 alerts that got reported last year, the government only investigated 1000. They are looking for solutions that help the public apply pressure on companies and the government to act. Another example is Climate Policy Radar (https://climatepolicyradar.org/) , laws and policies that will make or break our ability to overcome climate change; their challenge is about querying full-text documents in the global climate legislation database.
